TEACHER TALKS
Meet Mrs. Thompson!
College: I received my bachelor's degree in communication disorders from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Mo and my master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Northeastern University in Boston, Ma.
Years teaching/About me: This is my 17th school year working in education as a school-based speech therapist. My family and I relocated from St. Louis, Missouri to the Philadelphia area just this past summer. It's been fun getting to know a new city and experiencing all the Philadelphia traditions (and an Eagles' championship! Perhaps we're good luck! :D ). I have 2 sons, a 7th grader and a 4th grader. They play hockey and basketball, so most of my free time outside of school is spent traveling to or attending a sporting event! We also have a dog named Ruby and a lizard named Sticky. I've really loved getting to know all of the Stonehurst families, staff and students and feel very lucky to work in such a supportive community!
MENTAL HEALTH MONTHLY
Happy March, Stonehurst Family! My name is Mrs. Sanders and I am the School Social Worker at Stonehurst. This is the Mental Health Monthly section of the newsletter. The goal of the section is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and provide quick tips, information, and resources related to mental and behavioral health. I look forward to promoting and supporting the mental health of the Stonehurst community. Please remember that this content is for informational purposes only and she should not be considered a substitute for professional advice or consultation with mental health professionals. If you need help finding mental health professionals in your community, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. This month’s topic is Self Esteem!

The kiosks can be accessed anytime regardless of whether the building is open. They offer FREE COVID, Flu and RSV testing on site as well as numerous other products. There is no limit, but if you need multiple items, it is best to go during business hours and the staff inside the building can better assist you.

News from the Music Room
In music class, we started learning about Black History Month in February, but we have a March Madness Bracket in March! 4th and 5th grade will be ranking their favorite jazz song!
First grade has been practicing ta, ta-di, and sh. In March, they will be practicing the songs for their concert in May! More details will be sent out in April. First grade’s concert is food-themed!
Second grade has been learning songs for their concert, which is friendship-themed! They’ve been singing a song in Spanish, and our Spanish-speakers have been shining brightly! They will soon be learning more about instruments.
Third grade is continuing with recorder and preparing for their recorder concert in May. They will be taking instruments home in mid-March. When they bring instruments home, they will be expected to play music, not just squeaks. They should only be playing at good times, like when no one is sleeping. And they will have to bring them to and from school for every music class. The recorder should live in their backpack, so they don’t forget it for school. If they forget their instrument, they will practice with a pencil in music class. A flyer will be sent home with the recorder, and it will be included in the Wednesday Message from Mr. Chisholm.
Fourth and Fifth grade have been learning about the staff and treble clef. They have been identifying notes on the staff, and racing to see who has the fastest time! So far, Ms. Weekes' class holds the record for fastest identification of 10 notes: 25 seconds! Fourth grade will start on their May concert music later in March. Fifth grade will have a concert at their graduation!
Superstar Choir has been singing beautifully! They show up every Thursday, bright and early, ready to sing! They have been singing Galop, If I Were a Fish, Banana!, and Fill the World with a Song. Make sure to attend their performance at Multicultural Night: April 10th at 5:00 PM!
Get ready for an unforgettable musical experience on May 14th in the Multipurpose Room! You're invited to the Spring Concert featuring the talented students from grades 1 through 4! 🎶
First grade will kick things off with a fun and flavorful performance of food-themed songs that will have you smiling from ear to ear. Second grade will follow with a beautiful blend of sweet melodies in both English and Spanish! Third grade is set to impress with a lively and impressive recorder performance that you won’t want to miss. And finally, fourth grade will transport you with show-stopping hits from The Muppets and The Sound of Music – a performance packed with energy and excitement!

Mrs. Andrews’s second graders are working hard on improving their math skills on IXL.
Third grade is learning about “The Ultimate Playground!” We learned about forces that drive different playground equipment including force, gravity, static electricity, and magnetic forces. To culminate our lessons, we had a STEM lesson where we had to create our own game using magnets.
E.L.L. COLUMN
In this issue we are featuring a fifth grader, Germayony (left)!
Germayony came to America when she was nine years old with her mom and dad.
1. What was the weather like in Ecuador?
Some days were chilly and some days were warm. It was always in the middle. It would rain sometimes and once it even hailed.
2. Did you go to school in Ecuador?
Yes, learning division was more difficult in Ecuador because there weren't as many resources. I also had to wear a uniform. There's a lot more technology at school in America.
3. What is your favorite Ecuadorian food?
My favorite Ecuadorian food is chaulafan. It has rice, shrimp, fried bananas, and my mom makes it with eggs.
4. What did you do for fun in Ecuador?
I had a lot of friends. We would hang out, eat food, joke with each other, play tag, and double dutch with two or three jump ropes.
5. What do you miss most about Ecuador?
I miss my family, my friends, my teachers and my pets. I miss everything!
This month our bilingual buddies participated in a rainbow craft activity. Buddies helped their newcomer student practice speaking by listing the colors of the rainbow in order. While doing this, buddies explained some vocabulary in English and Spanish that they may see in the month of March. Some vocabulary students learned were words like shamrock, gold coins, pot of gold, and rainbow. To conclude, students created a rainbow chain with a pot of gold at the end. This month we welcomed newcomer Charlie to the group!
