Emerson Update 01/17/25
EMERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL MISSION
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE 01/17/25
Dear Emerson Families,
It's hard to believe we're already in mid-January! Semester 2 classes are in full swing, and our girls' basketball and wrestling teams are practicing hard. We recently concluded our mid-year iReady testing and are now preparing for the upcoming PSAT season later this semester.
Semester 2 always seems to fly by as students navigate new classes, engage in extracurricular activities, and begin to think about the transition to high school. To assist with this transition, high school counselors will be visiting Emerson starting at the end of January to guide our 8th-grade students through the high school course selection process. Our counselors are here to support our students and their families throughout this exciting time.
On a lighter note, I'd like to extend our best wishes to the Detroit Lions as they compete this weekend! This has been a very long time coming!
Finally, please be aware of the forecasted weather for Monday and Tuesday mornings. Please monitor the district website for any updates regarding potential school closures.
Have a wonderful and safe extended weekend as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
With Eagle Pride,
Bruce Rivera

Snow Days and Cold Weather Reminder
QUICK LINKS
Winter is Here! Please, dress accordingly.
Winter is Coming: A Friendly Reminder
As the weather turns colder, let's make sure our students stay warm and safe.
Building Times:
- Early Bird Arrival: The building will open at 7:30 AM.
- Morning Routine: Students arriving before 7:30 AM will wait outside. Once the building opens, they'll head to the cafeteria until 7:50 AM when they can go to their lockers.
- Afternoon Dismissal: All students should be picked up or leave the building by 3:00 PM unless they’re participating in a supervised activity.
Dressing for the Weather: Please ensure your child is dressed warmly for the outdoor wait times.
Let’s work together to keep our students comfortable and safe during these colder months.
SNOW DAYS and COLD DAYS
How Are They Decided in LPS?
Recognizing that our decision to close schools in inclement weather has a large impact on LPS families, we thought it would be helpful to share the factors that go into a weather-related school closing. Our goal is to always have school, whenever possible, knowing that students are best served by being in class. However, when Mother Nature throws a curve ball, we must keep staff and student safety as our top priority when making this decision.
How Do We Make Our Decision?
Several factors go into making a “snow day” call, including:
- Information on current road conditions from our transportation and maintenance crews; conditions are monitored throughout the night, and again at approximately 3:30 – 4 a.m. by LPS operations personnel
- Amount of snow and ice accumulated
- Duration and timing of the snow and/or ice event
- Temperature and wind chill (for safety of walkers and students at bus stops) We use a -20 wind chill for a sustained amount of time as a “cold weather closure” guide
- School building conditions (electricity, heat, water)
- School parking lot and sidewalk conditions
- Current weather conditions, along with predicted weather, but closures cannot be determined solely on predictions
- Will buses be operational and running on schedule?
- Consultation with weather consultants and other nearby school districts

A few key things to note:
The Livonia Parent Advisory Committee (LPAC) seeks parent representation from each Livonia Special Education Program. Parent representative volunteers have a child/children with a disability(ies). The LPAC also provides advisory input on matters regarding improvement of Special Education services within our school district.
Our Facebook page shares information of interest to our families and students.
Here, you will find electronic flyers for programs and events geared toward kids!
We hope that you enjoy the many offerings from around our great community!
If you have a program that you'd like to advertise, please email your flyer to Stacy Jenkins at sjenkins3@livoniapublicschools.org for approval. We follow a set of guidelines for approval and are only able to accept flyers for non-profit organizations that benefit our local children.

Emerson Clubs
Emerson Middle School has several clubs where students can connect with their peers, learn a new skill, or simply hang out with friends. We've had a volleyball club, robotics club, GSA club, and homework club. We would love to offer something for everyone! Our club list is always growing, and we're always open to new ideas. If your student has a dream club in mind or if you'd like to be an awesome advisor, let us know! Joining a club is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills, and have a blast!
