GMS Food Drive: Thank you!
Reflection and Goal-Setting
Reflective learners thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experiences. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.
December is a great time to reflect and set goals. Ask your child what s/he has done well during the first half of the school year and what s/he would like to work on improving. Work together to create a plan for success. Discuss how you will know when the goal has been reached - and how you will celebrate together!
Student Council Spreads Positivity
GMS Student Council members put up positivity posters throughout the school during their last meeting in November. These posters feature facts about teenage drinking (for example, 98% of Elkhart county teens choose NOT to drink alcohol when hanging out with friends). These posters were designed by students in Elkhart county. There will be more posters throughout the year!

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Bickel
Mrs. Bickel has been at GMS since January, 2019. She teaches 8th grade Science in the GIMS pathway and helps coordinate Builders Club. Mrs. Bickel grew up on a small farm in New Paris, where she raised pigs, calves, and dogs before graduating from Fairfield Jr/ Sr. High school in 1989.
Mrs. Bickel is a Colts, Pacers, and Cubs fan. She enjoys playing volleyball and knitting (she has successfully knit 22 baby blankets and 1 sock). She enjoys napping in her hammock, and she read 35 books over the summer. Mrs. Bickel also enjoys snakes, spiders, and flowers. She has one mile of flower beds at her house!
Mrs. Bickel has been married to the same man for 25 years. They have two daughters, Grace and Emma, and two black cats, Midnight and Luna. Mrs. Bickel loves GMS because of the students. She says, “We have kind and compassionate people everywhere! I enjoy working close to where I live and knowing people in my neighborhood.”
Attention, 8th Graders: Washington, D.C. Scholarship Opportunity!

The deadline for submitting essays is Friday, December 20th, 2019. The document below includes more details about the essay contest. Contact your child’s U.S. History teacher for more information.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities, and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
Goshen Middle School 6th and 7th Grade Girls are invited to apply for Heart and Sole at GMS. Applications will be open January 1st-February 1st. There is a fee, with financial aid available. This link will give more information: https://www.girlsontherunmichiana.org/Program-Registration
