Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - April 8, 2024
Washburne Families,
The weather forecast is looking great for our planned viewing of the Solar Eclipse. All of Washburne’s students and staff are planning to go outside to view the solar eclipse today from about 2:00-2:10 pm. All students and staff will have safety glasses to use to view the eclipse, and will be reminded of the safety precautions of wearing glasses if looking at the sun. This message will be reemphasized as students dismiss at 2:30.
We hope you are able to view the eclipse as well and look forward to the lively discussions that will take place before and after today’s eclipse.
If you are unable to be outside Click Here for a live link to view the eclipse.
You are invited to join us at Washburne next Tuesday, April 16th at 9:45am, for our next PTO Principal coffee. Washburne principals and our mental health team will be presenting on middle school mental health and social emotional learning. Parents will have an opportunity to interact and ask questions.
Our staff is looking forward to their own professional learning this Friday afternoon during our institute day. As a reminder, Friday 4/12 is a half day for students with an 11:50am dismissal.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Carleton Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
IAR Testing
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing will continue this week at Washburne on Tuesday, April 9th and Thursday, April 11th. Students should get a good night of rest and bring their fully-charged iPads to school each day to be prepared for testing.
Cell Phone Reminders
Students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school hours (8:30am-2:30pm on Mondays, 8:30am-3:30pm Tuesday-Friday). We understand that it is challenging for students to avoid checking their phones throughout the day--the technology is literally addicting. However, we want school to be a break from this technology--7 hours a day where they do not need to think about their phones. Please help us with this policy by talking to your child and avoiding texting your child during school hours. If there is ever a need to contact your child during school hours, please reach out to our main office.

New Episode! WINNETKA VOICES Season 2, Episode #5: Women in Leadership
March is Women’s History Month! Dr. Kelly Tess, Superintendent, is joined by three impactful women in our school community: Denise Dubravec, Winnetka Campus Principal/Assistant Superintendent at New Trier High School; Winnetka Public Schools alum Norah; and Marena Rudy, a Winnetka Public Schools Board Member. The women reflect on how they have been inspired and encouraged in order to lead with confidence. As Norah recognizes, “We have a lot of forward momentum.”
We hope this episode serves as a glimpse into how we can support women and girls in their leadership ventures by modeling self-advocacy, curiosity and empathy.
