Vol. 14 08/01/2023

Hello August
Make your June good, July better, and the month of August best!
We have concluded our Adult Summer Reading Program, and we want to thank everyone who participated, as well as say congratulations to the winners! There were lots of books that were read, and I loved hearing everyone's feedback. Even though this is the "end of summer," there is still over a month to go (technically 7 weeks until fall equinox, and we can say summer is officially over), so save your pumpkin spice lattes, and be patient with your Christmas décor that Hobby Lobby has out already, let's keep enjoying the nice weather while we can! But speaking of time going by quickly, we have four and a half month left of the year, are you keeping up with your reading goals? Mine was to read 50 books by the end of the year, but I am 5 books behind schedule, but as you can imagine with being a librarian, my want-to-read-list keeps growing and growing. I hope to hear that you are reaching your goals, and all of the great books you are reading.
Stay positive,
Brittany

The Even Book Club August book is...
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Goodreads 3.98 stars
A searing, postapocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.
A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.
The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other’s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.
Join other avid readers as we discuss this book Thursday August 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Normal Taproom in Danville. A copy of the book can be picked up at the adult services desk. Registration required for new participants.
Be sure to keep your heart open to these up-and-coming romance authors
Mile High (Windy City Series #1) by Liz Tomforde
Goodreads rating 4.12 Stars
Brittany's Rating 5 Stars
Zanders - Chicago hockey's bad boy—everyone’s favorite player to hate. Falls expectantly for the new flight attendant, Stevie, on his team’s private plane. As she starts to second guess everything. Including the promise she made to myself of never hooking up with an athlete again…no matter how annoyingly tempting he may be.
Evan Zanders is unfiltered, unapologetic, and too attractive for his own good. He loves his image, but she hate everything about it.
Brittany's note: This is a contemporary cheesy love story, and it gets even better in the second book, The Right Move.
Content Warning: This story contains explicit sexual content and topics that may be sensitive to some readers.
The Fine Print (Dreamland Billionaires #1) by Lauren Asher
Goodreads 3.91 Stars
Brittany's Rating 4 stars
Rowan- is in the business of creating fairy tales theme parks (think Disneyland, but they can't use Disneyland because of copyright).
Everything could be all his if I renovated Dreamland. His initial idea of hiring Zahra was good in theory, but then he kissed her. Things spiraled out of control once he texted her using an alias. By the time he realized where he went wrong, it was too late.
Zahra- After she submits a drunk proposal criticizing Dreamland's most expensive ride, Rowan Kane offers her a dream job.
The catch? She has to work for the most difficult boss she's ever met. Rowan is rude and completely off-limits, but her heart didn't care. At least not until she discovers his secret. It was time to teach the billionaire that money couldn't fix everything. Especially not the.
The Fine Print is the first book in a series of interconnected standalones following three billionaire brothers.
Brittany's note: This is yet again contemporary cheesy love story, and it gets even better in the second book. You see what's going to happen a mile away, but I don't know why the story is so good! It's a quick and easy read.
Content Warning: This story contains explicit sexual content and topics that may be sensitive to some readers.

Nominated for Best Romance 2022
Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon. Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.
Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.
There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.
At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.
