2021-2022 GWINNETT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS MIDDLE SCHOOL PROMOTION:
Hello Parents and Guardians,
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well.
As we get closer to the end of the school year, I wanted to share some important information about testing and promotion. Although promotion criteria was modified in the past 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become effective again this school year.
Please click here to review Gwinnett County Public Schools' Middle School Promotion criteria. We invite you to engage your children in conversations about promotion. Our teachers have been sharing the promotion criteria with our students also. Parents of 8th graders, please pay special attention to the fact that 8th graders must pass their English Language Arts and Mathematics Georgia Milestones exam in order to earn promotion to 9th grade.
There will be summer school offered from June 13 to July 1st at Coleman Middle School. This summer’s learning experience for Gwinnett elementary and middle school students will offer enrichment and acceleration opportunities as well as support for our students who did not meet requirements for promotion to the next grade.
Students invited to participate in summer school will start receiving letters on Friday, April 22 and throughout the next few weeks.
If you have any questions about promotion, please contact your grade level Assistant Principal:
6th Grade: Jennifer Dunn
7th Grade: Kim Booth
8th Grade: Jamie Larkin
Below you will find the Georgia Milestone schedule. Middle School students will start testing next week.
Thank you,
Dr. Hernandez.

OUR PLAN FOR DIGITAL LEARNING IF & WHEN NEEDED:
We continue our committment to maintain in-person instruction. However, in the event that there is a need to temporarily pivot to digital learning we want to be certain that each student has access. Our teachers and students are ready IF we need to make this change.
In the event we temporarily transition to digital learning, Coleman Middle will implement our typical digital learning day plan and schedule.
As a reminder:
Teachers will post a lesson for students to complete in Google Classroom - Humanities, Math, Science, and Connections. Students may log on at any time during the day to complete the lessons posted in Google Classroom; live instruction will not take place.
Teachers will be available via Zoom (Zoom link found on every teacher's eCLASS page) at the following times to answer questions:
6th grade - 10:15 - 10:45
7th grade - 11:00 - 11:30
8th grade - 12:30 - 1:00
Connections - 1:15 - 1:45
Beginning on 1/6, homeroom teachers surveyed students to determine if a device would be needed for digital learning. If your student still needs a device, please tell her/him to speak to their homeroom teacher or call the front office at 678-407-7400.
Please remember that students and families will be responsible for lost or damaged devices.

All students are required to receive one dose of Tdap and one dose of MCV4 vaccines before starting 7th grade.
If you are not sure if your student have received these vaccines, please contact your health care provider, or you can call the school clinic at 678-407-7410.

ATTENTION 8TH GRADE PARENTS!
On Tuesday April 26 we will be bringing a group of Duluth High School Student Leaders to our 8th grade home rooms to talk to our students about their 8th Grade Leadership Summit, 9LT (9th Grade Leadership Team), and clubs and sports. Please encourage your students to select an activity or club and to reach out to the coach or sponsor, and that way they can be connected and engaged right from the beginning of 9th grade. This will be a great help in the transition from Middle School to High School.

JOIN US IN CELEBRATING SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH:
Please CELEBRATE School Library Month and the critical role of the media center in your school:
- Visit your school library and thank the media specialist and media clerk for the work they do.
- Send a note or email with a specific aspect of the media program you especially appreciate.
- Recognize the media program and media specialist at a faculty meeting or in a school publication.
Why are media centers so critical to the whole learner?
- Students read more and learn more when they can choose what they read. First we must teach children to read, but then we want them to LOVE to read.
- The media center is a mental and physical safe space that welcomes all who want to read for learning, to explore new ideas or just for fun.
- The media center is a kitchen, not a grocery store….more than a grab and go, the library provides makerspaces, productivity software, broadcast equipment and a professional media specialist – all combine to make our libraries learning and collaboration labs.

Nominating Committee/Future Executive Board:
If you have been looking to get more involved in the PTA, now is your time!
We NEED parents interested in taking a position on the Board. Many of us currently on the Board are either moving on from CMS or reaching the end of our two years of eligibility in or current positions - this includes the two Presidents!
If you're hesitant, just remember that each one of us on the Board was hesitant at first, too, but we truly have a great time serving our children and yours!
If you are interested in being part of the nominating committee or the Board, please email colemanwildcatspta@gmail.com, and indicate your area of interest.
