Words From Our Principal
Hello Parents,
It is hard to believe that this school year is almost over. It has been a great year, full of success stories, and students doing amazing things. As we get close to the end of the year, it is important that students do their best in their end-of-course exams. Please talk to them about the importance of the tests and to ensure they come prepared and well rested. In a couple of weeks half our students will be going to high school and the other half will become the new role models of our incoming 7th graders. It is a great responsibility, but I’m sure our students are up to the challenge. I look forward to seeing you at the promotion ceremony and I wish all of you and your families a great and safe summer.

Library Debate Congress
Bonita Vista Middle students participated in a program called Middle School Congress. Students from Bonita Vista High's Speech and Debate team taught our students how to compete in Congress which is one of many ways to compete at a Speech and Debate invitational. On Saturday April 23rd, our students competed against the freshmen Speech and Debate students and performed very well. Mr. Eric Helle is the advisor for the Speech and Debate team at Bonita Vista High. Great job Crusaders!

Mental Health Awareness Month
May is mental health awareness month. In honor of such an important cause, I wanted to write a post directed to those struggling with mental health issues. So often mental illness is stigmatized, leading those that struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or eating disorders to name a few, to feel isolated and alone. Let's work together towards eliminating the stigma, creating means for open communication, and letting go of judgment towards others and ourselves. To those of you reading this, who feel alone or stigmatized because of a diagnosis, this is for you.
You are not defined by your mental illness. Let me say that once more, because unfortunately we live in a world where very often you are told the exact opposite of this. You are not defined by your mental illness. You are not the "bipolar one in the family," you are someone living with bipolar disorder. You are not defined by your anxiety, you are a person who is living with anxiety. You are not just a "depressed person," you are someone who has depression, as well as may other parts of themselves that add up to equal a whole person. You are not anorexic, you are someone struggling with anorexia. You are more than just a label.
We are whole. We are diverse. We are unique. While mental health issues can feel like they take over a large part of your existence, especially when they are more present than not, they are still not all of you. You are still a daughter, a son, a mother, a father, a wife, a husband, a partner, a parent, a sibling, a cousin, a friend, a person.
While on the surface this may sound like just semantics, it is so much deeper than that. So often we define ourselves by the things that have happened in our lives, by the issues we face, the job we have, the way we look. But what if we look deeper than that? What if we are more than a label? Ultimately the interpretation is up to us, so why limit ourselves, or place judgment on ourselves based on one part of a whole?
For some, a diagnosis of mental illness can be a relief, an explanation as to why we feel the way we do. A comfort in knowing that we are not alone, that there is a definition to what we are experiencing. But to others, this becomes a definition of the whole self. Some may lose their sense of identity in this label, forgetting that they are made up of so many intricate parts that make them beautifully whole.
The choice of how you define yourself is up to you. You can choose to recognize your mental health issues as a part of you, rather than all of you. You can be more than your struggles. You can choose to view your challenges as what makes you strong and resilient. The next time you hear someone define you or someone else as anything with an "ic" following the word (like bulimic or dyslexic) or a diagnosis in general, consider rephrasing this idea for them, as your words may be more impactful than you realize. You may be the first person to help them recognize that they are more than just their mental illness, they are whole, just as you are.

END OF YEAR MEDICATION PICK-UP
A number of our 8th grade students have medications which will need to be picked up at the end of the school year. Many of these are emergency medications (Epipens, Benadryl, asthma inhalers) that will need to remain at school until the last day of the semester. Exiting 8th grade students may pick up their medications on Thursday, June 2nd after graduation practice, Tuesday June 7th or Wednesday June 8th between the hours of 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM or by appointment. Exiting 7th grade students may pick up their medications on Tuesday June 7th or Wednesday June 8th between the hours of 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM or by appointment. Returning students may leave their medications in the nurse’s office for the next school year.
Returning students who have prescription medications to be used at school will need to have their physician orders renewed for the 2016/2017 school year. Incoming 7th grade students with school medications will need to have physician orders as well. These forms can be obtained at the nurse’s office. Please call if you have any questions regarding the forms or medication pick up.
It’s been a pleasure to meet all of the students and families this year. I wish everyone a very happy and healthy summer break.
Take care,
Christi Stoddard, BSN, RN, PHN

Technology Corner
As you get ready to turn in your iPad it is extremely important that you back up your work, just in case you need it. Saving your work is easy with Google Drive. Keep in mind you may have work in Notability, Photos, Explain Everything, and iMovie. To make sure your Notability notes are backed up to Google Drive watch the video clip for step by step instructions. To back up your other work, most of it can be saved to your camera roll to be accessed in accessed in Photos and then exported to Google Drive. To back up your photos, first select the photos you want to keep and then tap the share icon (the box with the arrow pointing up). Select Google Drive from the list. If is not there tap More and select Google Drive and it will add it to the list. You must be able to log in to Google Drive to do this. If you have work on any other app there will probably be some way to back it up to Google Drive if you explore the settings for that app. If you have any questions please come to the Genius Bar in room 606 during Advisory. Ask your teacher for a pass.
