Testing Information for Parents
JUNIOR HIGH STARTS THIS WEEK
State Testing Dates for 3rd-8th grades: May 2-May 20, 2022
What do the state tests measure? Tests are designed to measure either ability or achievement. Achievement tests (such as the state tests) can help measure what children have learned in one subject or many.
Why do schools give children tests?
Tests help teachers, parents, and students know more about what children have learned and what they need to work on. It is important to remember, however, that tests don’t tell everything. Other information- class work, projects and teacher comments- should also be considered when trying to give an accurate picture of how a child is doing.
What can I do to help my child to do better on tests?
- Mark important test dates on the calendar.
- Try not to schedule anything for the night before the test.
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
- Eating a nutritious breakfast can also help your child perform better.
- Encourage your child to do their very best.
- Try to avoid any stressful situations for your child.
Feel confident about your child’s abilities and celebrate their achievements.
We all know test results are important. They are important because they help us measure the impact of our instruction. To encourage kids to do their best on a test, we can…
-Encourage a positive attitude: “It may be tough but you can do it!”
-Be sure they eat a good breakfast. Kids think better on a full stomach.
-Tell them not to worry if a question seems tricky: Reread it. Answer the best you can.
-Remind them to go back to make sure they didn’t make careless mistakes.
-Be on time to school.
Parents: Thank you for your support and partnership in helping to create a positive academic experience for your child. You are terrific!

May 9-13, 2022, is Student Mental Health Week!
This week draws attention to the important issue of student mental health! Children and youth mental health issues are real, widespread, and treatable. One in five youth are identified as struggling psychologically. Take a moment to discuss with your child how important their mental health is to you. Carlton Hills School is committed to every child thriving and fulfilling their potential and we stand with the entire Santee School District to support our students’ mental, and emotional wellbeing.
During California Student Mental Health Week, our teachers and counselor will be teaching the meaning of mental health and promoting the importance of learning healthy coping tools from a young age. Carlton Hills has a school counselor available four days per week to provide individual, group, and crisis response services to students. School counselors can also assist with resources and outside referral support. You can find more information on our counselor's webpage in addition to a number of resources for Mental Health Week!
Please consider attending a workshop on Monday, May 9, from 4:00-5:30pm (provided by the California Association of School Counselors)
