• It is important to look at your course selections as a whole and evaluate your outside commitments to make sure you will have enough time for each course to do your best without frustration. Balance of rigor and responsibilities is important in your wellness and stress management.
• It is recommended you consult with teachers, counselors and your family when making course selections.
• It is recommended you read over the course descriptions to make sure a class will be a good fit and you meet the pre-requisites.
• Take advantage of what the course fair information can provide you. Listen intently and ask questions.

• English: 4 credits
• Math: 4 credits
• Social Studies: 3 credits
• Science: 3 credits
• World Language: 2 credits
• Health & PE: 1 credit
• Visual, Performing, Applied Arts: 1 credit

Box A

• Select either Language Arts 10 or Honors Language Arts 10

Should I take Honors LA 10? A couple of points to consider.

• If you took and did well in Honors LA 9 and would like to continue the honors level of rigor and challenge.
• If you were a strong student in LA 9, earned high marks (consistent A's) on your essays/writing assignments and you are looking for more of a challenge.
• Please consult with your Language Arts 9 teacher if you are interested in Honors LA10 for a recommendation.

Box A:

• Select either US History or AP US History
• Most sophomores will take U.S. History
• *AP U.S. History is very challenging. Consult with your World History and/or Mr. Mize if you are considering taking it. This is a college level US History course that includes college level reading, writing, problem solving and critical thinking.

• AP courses are college level curriculum taught in high school. It is a national curriculum set forth by College Board.
• Consider an AP class in an area you have an strong interest in and are passionate about.
• Some AP classes have pre-requisites so make sure you check you've had the proper instruction prior.
• AP courses are preparing you for an AP exam in May.
• Depending on each college's AP guidelines and your AP exam score (1 to 5); there is some potential for college credit to be earned.
• AP classes will require time outside of school to study. Please make sure you balance your schedule leaving enough time to study for all your classes, keep up with your outside of school commitment and take of yourself.

• AP Courses CANNOT to be dropped after the last day of school, during the summer or at registration so please consider carefully.

Box A:

• If you are currently in Physical Science, choose Biology
• If you are concurrently in Physical Science and Biology, then choose either Chemistry or Physics. Remember, it is strongly recommended that you have completed Algebra 2 or will be taking it concurrently with either of these courses.

Box A:

• Write your current math class on the line
• Select the next course in your math sequence
• If you are currently in an Honors class and it going well then we would encourage you to choose the next Honors class in sequence.
• If you are currently in an Honors class doing your best and it's not going as well and you had hoped, you may want to consider the regular track math class for next year.
• If you are currently in the regular track math class, getting "A"s on all of your assessments (checkpoints, quizzes & tests) and you are looking for more of a challenge speak to your 1st semester math teacher about moving into the Honors track for next year.
• Regardless of your situation, a discussion with your 1st semester math teacher is valuable.

Box B

• You need 2 years of the same World Language to graduate.
• If you haven't yet begun this requirement, you should strongly consider doing so next year.
• Please indicate the LEVEL of language you will be taking NEXT year.
• If you are doing well in your world language it is recommended to continue. Colleges view world language courses as an academic class and you never know when your language skills could come in handy in your future or strengthen your resume.
• You could also consider a new world language if need be.
• If you believe it is in your best interest to complete only one year of a World Language, you can "flex"* and take 1.0 additional credit in VPAA or a formal CTE program to fulfill this graduation requirement. (a Flex form is also required and available in the counseling office.) If this is something you are considering please consult with your counselor and you will also want to check potential college entrance expectations and requirements.

*flex option is available if you are unable to meet the 2nd year requirement. See counselor for more information. When possible students are strongly encouraged to complete 2 years of a WL.

Box C

• Pick your electives from the 10th Grade Course Offerings sheet and write them in Box C.
• If you still need to complete your World Language requirement, your electives in Box C should only add up to 2 semesters total.
• If you are NOT selecting a world language course next year (Box C) should total 4 semesters.
• Look on the course offerings list to see your options.
• Do your research, consult with others and choose wisely!

PE & Health Requirement =1 Credit

• Option 1: PE Activity Course and Health (9th - 12th grade)
• Option 2: Flex PE- Participation in 2 seasons of a RCS approved MHSAA Sport or Marching Band is equivalent to .5 PE. PE Waivers are filled out after each sports season and turned into counseling office within 2 weeks of the final season end. Please understand you will still need to take the HEALTH semester course to complete the full PE/Health requirement.

  Students MUST use their RCS gmail accounts to access. Please leave a note at the bottom of the card explaining which classes you would drop if you are accepted into yearbook. After Mrs. Millard receives the applications and completes the interviews, we will find out which students to add to the class. If you are a returning Yearbook student, Mrs. Millard will sign your schedule card. Do not include yearbook on your course selections.

Placement on Student Council requires an application process consisting of a written essay, school vote (incoming 10-12 only), questionnaire, interview, and teacher recommendations. Applications are available in the Spring and their availability will be announced during the morning announcements. Please do not put Student Council on your schedule as it will take up an elective spot, schedule adjustments will be made after council selection is completed. See Ms. Antrup in C262 if you have questions.

• You must include four Alternative Elective Choices in Box E
• You need alternatives for you Electives courses in case your electives do not fit into your schedule.
• Select alternative courses you will enjoy. They may be in your schedule next year.

We strongly encourage you to take some time to draft a 3 year course plan on the back of your scheduling card. Thinking through and putting some ideas together about classes you may be interested taking in 11th or 12th grade can help for planning and preparing(taking the proper pre-requisites).

Interested students should check out their website (https://www.ostconline.com/) For planning purposes OSTC takes take up 6 semesters each year (3 hours each semester).

If you are planning to play college sports Division 1 or Division 2, then you need to check the NCAA website for all the NCAA eligibility requirements and register with the NCAA. https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/

Division 1 eligibility requirements: 16 core classes

• 4 years of English
• 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher)
  
• 2 years of natural/physical science (one must be a lab science)
  
• 1 year of additional English, math or science
  
• 2 years of social studies
  
• 4 years of additional core courses (from any area listed above, or from foreign language, non-doctrinal religion or philosophy)

• Summer Learning Program (SLP) information will be available on the district website in late winter/early spring.
• Summer School is opportunity to recover missed credit.
• Summer Schools is opportunity to potential make room in your schedule for more academics.
• Not all classes are offered in the summer, so students need to review the SLP brouchure once it's available for both seat and online options.

• Students are allowed to take up to 2 classes online per semester. Applications must be filled out and turned into the counseling office with your schedule card (but no later than April 1st) if considering this option.

• Please make sure your course selections on the front of the card add up to 12!
• Please make sure you go over this schedule with your parents. Give them time to think about your choices and process the information before asking them to sign your card.
• A PARENT SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED TO TURN IN YOUR SCHEDULE CARD.
• Input your course selections on StudentVUE by February 1st.

• Please turn your scheduling card into the counseling office before on by February 2nd.

• Counselors will look over your course requests but please reach out and connect with them if you have any questions or need to discuss your course planning.
