The Chemistry of Fireworks
In Mrs. Twining's Chemistry CP classes, students investigated the principles of electron excitation through a flame test lab. During this hands-on experiment, they examined the chemical compounds responsible for the vibrant colors in fireworks. By dissolving these substances in water and subjecting them to a Bunsen burner flame, students observed the process of electron excitation, resulting in the emission of colorful light. Through this interactive lab, students gained valuable insights into chemistry while also uncovering the enchanting science that brings fireworks to life.
Mr. Cameron's Astronomy Class
As the Astronomy classes continue their survey across the Universe, they were investigating
“Retrograde”. This is the phenomena of certain planets appearing to reverse their direction in their
orbit as observed over a period of several nights. Pictured here the students are performing a
demonstration that showed them how the appearance of retrograde can be observed. The students
focused on an object in the background of their walking partner and observed the apparent “reversal” in direction of those objects as they passed their partner.
