Principal's Weekly Message
Bonita Vista Middle School Community,
Happy Mother's Day to all our wonderful mothers out there!
With just four weeks left in our school year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to you—our incredible Bonita Vista Middle School community.
Thank you for the outpouring of support during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Your generosity was overwhelming—56 gift cards were donated by our parent community, and throughout the week, families brought in food, baked goods, thoughtful gifts, and kind words of thanks. Your heartfelt gestures reminded us once again of the strong partnership that exists between our school and its families.
When I say “thank you for your continued partnership,” please know those words are not said lightly. This partnership is built on shared action and mutual support, and we are truly fortunate to have such caring, involved parents and students. You help create the strong, nurturing environment that makes BVM a special place to learn and grow.
As we continue moving forward, I want to remind everyone that feedback is a gift. Just as you have shared tangible gifts with our teachers this past week, we ask you to continue offering your feedback—through conversations with teachers, communication with staff, or engagement with our administration. These ongoing dialogues allow us to better serve your/our children and create the best learning environment possible.
Now, turning our focus to the final stretch of the school year:
Every day matters—because we’re running out of them (19 School Days Left).
Every completed assignment can make a difference in a student’s grade. Every day of attendance strengthens learning and growth.
Our call to action for students:
-
To our 8th graders, stay focused and finish strong as you prepare for the transition to high school. Do not do anything to risk the opportunity to participate in our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony (for eligible students).
-
To our 7th graders, begin stepping into your roles as campus leaders—you are the future role models of BVM!
Please review our Week at a Glance for important upcoming events, including upcoming events from our Dual Language Immersion Program and our 8th Grade Awards Ceremony.
Lastly, take a moment to read about the accomplishments of our Boys and Girls Flag Football Teams, who wrapped up strong seasons, and our Cheerleaders, who closed the year with passion, spirit, and grace under the hot sun this past weekend. As one chapter closes in our students’ journey, let’s provide the space for reflection and celebrate the many lessons they’ve learned and our learning along the way.
Let’s have an awesome week, BVM!
We appreciate you—and we are so proud of this community.
With gratitude,
Alexander Salazar
Principal, Bonita Vista Middle School

7th Grade Soccer Intramural Champions Make BVM History!
For the first time in Bonita Vista Middle School history, one of our 7th grade teams defeated an 8th grade team in a friendly competition! Coach Quijas officiated an intense and spirited 7th vs. 8th grade soccer match last Wednesday, and the energy on the field was electric.
The final score was 3-0, with the 7th graders securing a decisive victory and, for this year at least, claiming the crown as our soccer intramurals champions!
Celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week at Bonita Vista Middle School
This past week, we had the joy and privilege of celebrating our incredible teachers and staff at Bonita Vista Middle School during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanks to the thoughtful planning and coordination of Assistant Principal Ms. Higareda, our team was recognized, appreciated, and celebrated in meaningful ways each day.
A huge thank-you goes out to our generous and supportive parent community. Your contributions made it possible for us to provide small daily gifts and a special luncheon for our teachers—and most notably, gift each one of them a gift card as a token of our appreciation. Your kindness and partnership played a key role in making this week a memorable one.
Recognizing and honoring our teachers is essential. Their impact on the lives of our children is profound. Every day, they make hundreds of important decisions while engaging with around 176 students. Unlike most professions, their work is constantly on display, requiring them to balance academic rigor, emotional support, and high expectations with grace. And while they often make it look effortless, we know that teaching is both incredibly demanding and deeply rewarding.
We truly love and appreciate our teachers. It was a joy to celebrate them this past week—and thanks to your support, they now head into this final stretch of the school year reenergized. With CAASPP testing behind us and only four weeks to go, Bonita Vista Middle is ready to finish strong!
BVM Girls Flag Football: Undefeated and Unstoppable!
In a season that can only be described as dominant, the Bonita Vista Middle School Girls Flag Football Team capped off their undefeated campaign with a commanding 18–6 victory over Rancho Del Rey Middle, clinching the 2025 Mesa Girls Flag Football Championship.
From the first snap of the season to the final whistle of the title game, these talented young athletes set the tone—and the standard—for excellence. Routinely defeating opponents by margins of 20 points or more, BVM’s girls didn’t just win games—they overwhelmed, outmatched, and outplayed every team in their path.
What made this team truly special wasn’t just their offense or defense—it was the balance between the two. They were a well-oiled machine, equally explosive with the ball in hand and relentless when defending (They had some nice blitz packages). That dual threat kept opposing coaches guessing and rival teams reeling all season long.
In the championship showdown, the ladies wasted no time. They jumped out to an early 8–0 lead and never looked back. Rancho Del Rey fought valiantly, showing grit and determination, but the BVM defense answered the call again and again. A late-game interception all but sealed the deal, sending the home crowd into celebration mode and etching this team’s name into school history.
Congratulations to Rancho Del Rey for an intense and competitive final, and a massive shoutout to our BVM champions, who not only went undefeated but also raised the bar for what’s possible on the flag football field (look out for these ladies in high school).
Let’s go, BVM! Champions now and forever!
BVM Boys Show True Grit in Memorable Flag Football Run
They may not have walked away with the championship trophy, but make no mistake—our Bonita Vista Middle School Boys Flag Football Team walked off the field with pride, heart, and the unwavering support of their school community.
Facing off against a powerhouse Eastlake Middle School squad in the championship game, our boys gave it everything they had. While the scoreboard didn’t tilt in our favor this time, their journey was nothing short of inspiring.
From a dominant early-season start to battling through a tough stretch of late regular-season matchups, the BVM boys never wavered. They regrouped, refocused, and stormed into the playoffs with something to prove. Their defining moment? A thrilling upset of the #1 seed Chula Vista Middle School in the semifinals—a game that showcased their resilience, teamwork, and undeniable belief in one another.
This season wasn’t just about wins and losses. It was about growth. About grit. About learning that near-success can be just as formative as hoisting the championship banner. As poet Emily Dickinson once wrote:
“Success is counted sweetest / By those who ne’er succeed. / To comprehend a nectar / Requires sorest need.”
That taste of defeat? It stings now—but it also shapes champions. Our boys will carry this experience forward, both on and off the field, and it will fuel them for greater triumphs to come.
To our players, our dedicated coaches, and the parents who cheered every down: thank you. You gave us a season to remember. And to our boys—hold your heads high. You played with honor, heart, and pride. We stand with you today and always.
BVM strong. Always loyal. Forever proud.
Let's go!!!
Heat, Heart, and Hustle: BVM Cheer Finishes the Season Like True Champions
In the sweltering 90-degree heat at Otay Ranch High School, with the sun beating down and two championship flag football games unfolding back-to-back, one group stood unwavering on the sidelines—our Bonita Vista Middle School Cheerleaders.
With boundless energy and unshakable spirit, BVM Cheer capped off an incredible season by doing what they’ve done best all year: showing up, standing tall, and lifting up every athlete who took the field. But this wasn't just another game day. It followed an emotional week—some of our cheerleaders had just learned they'd earned spots on Bonita Vista High School’s Varsity Cheer Squad for next year, while others faced the heartbreak of not making the cut. Yet you wouldn’t have known it. With professionalism and maturity beyond their years, they rallied together, put the team first, and delivered a performance that inspired everyone watching. We can all learn from this team, as I have this season! These ladies are special!
All season long—across three different sports seasons—these athletes were a constant. Rain or shine, win or lose, BVM Cheer brought pride, discipline, and unmatched school spirit to every field, court, and assembly. Their consistency and commitment didn’t go unnoticed. Having witnessed their work ethic firsthand, I can say with confidence: these young women are not just cheerleaders—they are champions in their own right.
To Coach Alyssa, thank you for building and leading one of the most successful and respected programs on campus. And to our cheer squad: thank you for the heart, energy, and pride you bring to Bonita Vista Middle. You make us all stand a little taller.
BVM Cheer—this one’s for you. Let’s go Bonita, Let's go. Let's go Bonita, let's go!

🎉 Congratulations to Our 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year: Ms. Laurel Bade! 🎉
We are thrilled to celebrate Ms. Laurel Bade, who has been honored as Bonita Vista Middle School’s 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year—an award voted on by her colleagues in recognition of her dedication and impact.

Beyond her exceptional teaching, Ms. Bade is known for her kindness, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to student success.

Grades Go Up When Families Eat Together
We understand that with busy schedules and different work commitments, finding time to eat together can be challenging. However, research shows that teens and kids who share meals with their families regularly are significantly more likely to achieve excellent grades—up to 40% more likely to earn A's and B's compared to those who have fewer family dinners each week.
At BVM, we encourage you to prioritize family meals, even if it’s just on weekends or during holidays. These moments you share around the table can strengthen your family bond and create great memories, fostering communication and support.
We recognize that every family's situation is unique, and even a few shared meals can make a big difference. So, let’s celebrate those opportunities to come together, nourish our bodies, and deepen our connections whenever we can. Thank you for your efforts to make family time a priority!
Celebrating Our Certificated Staff Member of the Month – Ms. Kavouklis!
We are thrilled to recognize and celebrate our Certificated Staff Member of the Month—Ms. Kavouklis!
Ms. Kavouklis is truly one of Bonita Vista Middle School’s finest educators. A master of both curriculum and instructional strategy, she brings a deep passion for English and a genuine love for teaching that radiates in her classroom every single day. Her dedication to her students and her role as a mentor make her an invaluable part of our school community and our district writ-large.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Kavouklis played a key role in BVM earning the No Place for Hate School 2024 designation. Her leadership through the Drama Club and the powerful anti-bullying play they presented last year made a lasting impact on our campus culture and the Anti-Defamation League took notice!
We are incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Kavouklis on our team. Congratulations, and thank you for all that you do! 💙🎉
CURRENT COVID 19 PROTOCOLS
We have been reviewing the study cited above in our efforts to always work on improving our school culture. Although we have seen significant improvements in student behaviors the past 5 years (according to our student incident data), we are always looking for areas of improvement. Our latest area of focus is targeting behaviors related to bullying, especially the bullying of students with disabilities. In following some of the strategies cited in the Princeton study above, we will be pursuing the following steps:
1. Setting Clear Expectations --In Progress
2. Enforcing Consequences for Bullying Behaviors --In Progress
3. Recruiting the help of our Students to Improve Student Culture and Target Bullying Behaviors (Begins 2nd Semester)
