Mitch's Memo
Hello All,
I hope this writing finds you doing well. It appears we have had a good start to the school year. The year seems to be rapidly passing by. Homecoming activities concluded this past week. The 1st quarter will end on the 17th of October with Parent/Teacher conferences taking place on Monday October 21st, from 12:30 – 7:00 p.m. I want to encourage you to take the time to meet and conference with your students’ teachers.
Voters in the West Nodaway R-I School District approved a Bond Issue this past Spring. I am pleased to report that all items included in the construction have been completed except the boiler. The new boiler is in place and needs some minor work. As colder weather approaches it will be tested and the project will be completed.
I would like to commend the West Nodaway PTO on taking the lead in restructuring the elementary playground. The PTO has been working toward collecting funds as well as applying for grants to go toward playground use. The district has been notified of the awarding of a $40 thousand dollar grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Work on the playground would take place in the Spring and Summer of 2025.
As I do each year I want to encourage you to come out and support our students in their extra-curricular activities. As you can tell from our numerous lists and calendars there is always some type of activity taking place. I know the students appreciate your support.
If there is anything you wish to discuss please stop by or call the office. I hope you have a great October!

Hello Rocket Family!
It's hard to believe its already October! Fall is my favorite time of year! Since our September newsletter, our teachers have stayed busy learning more classroom management techniques through the 4’Cs workshop as well as attending the 275 Conference PD in Maryville where they got to see Gerry Brooks speak, attend various breakout sessions, and network with their fellow teachers.
We also survived Homecoming week, which is always a lot of fun, but very busy!
Students are also staying busy with academics, athletics, and organizations! Our overall attendance has been really good. Please continue to hold your student to a high standard and ensure they are in school on a regular basis.
We are just a few short weeks away from the end of the first quarter. Please check the school calendar for important dates such as grade checks and activities.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be help on October 21st from 12:30-7:00pm. The MS/HS is an open house style so please come and go as it works in your schedule. Participation in our building has been low the last few years, so I encourage you to attend and learn more about your student(s) academic progress and happenings in the classrooms.
As I shared last month, the JH/HS continues to implement Character Strong during 8th hour every
Tuesday. We are also still utilizing Check and Connect. We now have built in time during 8th hour on
Fridays for mentors and students to meet.
Please check the school calendar on the website. In addition, it's important you stay current on your
students’ grades thru the parent portal in Infinite Campus. Grade checks will occur every two weeks.
Below are the tutoring hours that are available for the JH/HS students.
- Tutoring Hours:
- Math - Daily 7:15am-7:45am, Wed/Thurs 3:45pm-4:30pm
- Science - Daily 3:45pm-4:30pm
- Social Studies - Tues/Wed/Thurs 7:15am-7:35am; 3:45pm-4:25pm
- Music/Band - Wed/Thurs 3:45pm-4:45pm
- College Apps & Scholarships - Daily 7:00am-7:30am, 3:45pm-4:45pm
Finally, if you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call, email, or stop in the office.

Hello Rocket Family!
We are over halfway through the 1st quarter. Time flies when you are having fun. A lot has been happening in the first month of school. We have been working on all kinds of data collection and once again this year, due to state mandates, we are creating reading success plans for those students who are below grade level in reading skills. If your child requires a reading success plan (RSP), the classroom teacher will meet with you at Parent Teacher Conferences on October 21st to discuss the details of the plan. It has been and will be the goal of West Nodaway Elementary to provide our students with the interventions needed for students to become successful readers. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss reading success plans.
October 1st is Teacher Night at McDonalds. This is a fundraiser for our Certified Teachers Association. Please stop by and support our teachers and have a good time being served by the West Nodaway teachers and administrators.
The end of the 1st Quarter is Thursday, October 17, 2024; this is also the date for Elementary Picture retakes and make-ups.
Parent Teacher Conferences are Monday October 21st from 12:30p.m. -7:00p.m. In the near future, links and information will be sent out to sign up for a time. Please keep an eye out for this sign up and if you are having trouble signing up, please contact the elementary office. Over the past several years we have had nearly 100% attendance for Parent Teacher Conferences and perfect attendance is our goal.
Once again, we will have Trunk or Treat for Halloween this year. More information will be sent out closer to the actual date. Parents and community members are welcome to attend the trunk or treat event which is held on the track. Only parents who are signed up for classroom parties will be allowed in the school building to attend the classroom parties. I would like to say “thank you” in advance to all the people who organize Trunk or Treat as well as the local businesses who participate. This event is something our students really look forward to and enjoy.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the classroom teacher or myself and I will do my best to help you.
Have a great month,
Mr. Conn

Nurse's News
KidSight Vision came and tested our PreK-2nd grade students. We screened 60 students and had 5 referrals, so if you didn’t hear from me your student passed this screening. We are lucky to have the Lion’s Club come provide this service to our students. If you have a student who was referred please get the follow ups scheduled soon! There is financial assistance available so please reach out with any questions.
Big Smiles dental team is scheduled for October 22nd, they will be here all day for dental cleanings and simple procedures. We already have a full schedule for the day but if you would like to be added to our list let us know. Online registration is also available: https://www.myschooldentist.com/WOWNMO_schsrm. If your student was seen last spring they are on our list to be seen. They will return on April 24th for our spring visit.
We also scheduled our flu shot clinic with Nodaway County Health. They will be here during parent teacher conferences on October 21st from 4-7pm. Most health insurances cover this expense, however if no health insurance the cost is $20. Permission slips are available now so let me know if you need these ahead of time. This clinic is open to WN staff, students and their families.
I am taking chapstick and deodorant donations! We go through a lot of chapstick and deodorant for our students and I am running out. If anyone is willing to donate new tubes of chapstick or new sticks of deodorant I’d be very grateful. It is helpful when I can give these to a student so they can leave it at their desk or in their cubby/locker to use all day. If you have some for your own student please send and have them keep it at school.

October brings many college and career exploration opportunities for students 7-12 to learn outside the school building:
- October 4 – Manufacturing (MFG) Day for all Nodaway County 8th Grade students. The day is spent touring various businesses in Nodaway County and learning about career options in the area.
- October 9 – College Fair at Northwest Missouri State University for interested seniors. Students will have an opportunity to talk with over 50 different universities/colleges/tech schools, take a tour of Northwest, and eat on campus.
- October 10 – Tarkio Technical Institute will be at West Nodaway to speak with juniors and seniors about attending college.
- October 14 – College and Career field trip to North Central Missouri College Savannah and Trenton campuses. The event is open to all 7-12th Grade students and will focus on medical certifications and careers.
- October 16 – My Success Event at St. Joseph Civic Arena for all juniors and seniors. Students will have an opportunity to talk with businesses in each career pathway and participate in hands on activities such as putting on fireman gear and seeing how a pulmonary machine works. This is a great opportunity for students to inquire about job options, skills and education requirements.
- October 29 – ACT testing at West Nodaway for interested juniors and seniors.
- October 30 – Missouri Western State University will be at West Nodaway to speak with juniors and seniors about attending college.
As a reminder, ACT test prep, college athletics, scholarships, etc. can be located on the counseling
department webpage. You can access this through the West Nodaway homepage and finding it under the “Student Links” section or going to https://wnrocketscounselor.weebly.com.
Sophomores will be attending the Nodaway County Docudrama on October 10th. This event is a traffic crash simulation with the cause being distracted and/or intoxicated driving. The scenario is reenacted by area high school senior volunteers from each school. After the simulation, there will be presentations from area community members who have been personally impacted by the loss of someone from a traffic fatality.
Elementary students have spent all September focusing on the character word Respect and October brings the new word of Responsibility where students will learn skills on being responsible for their decisions such as completing homework, cleaning up messes, and following directions. Along with the character lessons, students will also begin working on “Vote for School Lunch”. Students have already voiced their opinions on the best school lunch option and 6th Grade will tabulate the results next week to determine the top three choices. Upper elementary will be divided into three groups and work on “campaigns” to promote one of these options as the best school lunch. All elementary students will vote for their favorite in November.
Please contact me if there are any concerns about your child or if there are any questions.
