MCH Leads Blog: Reflecting on Leadership – Maha and Estefanía’s Journey as MCH Leads Editors
As the school year comes to an end, our 2022-2024 MCH Leads editors, Maha Mehmood and Estefanía Henríquez Luthje, are preparing to wrap up their roles and pass the baton. In this entry, they reflect on the milestones achieved, experiences gained, and lessons learned during these two years of sharing the work of MCH leaders from across the country while being full-time MCH students. As Maha shares, “Being an MCH leader means deeply caring about the well-being of mothers, children, and families and working tirelessly to ensure they have the support they need. It involves speaking up for those who are often ignored and taking action to address the root causes of health disparities.” Learn more about their journey as MCH Leads co-editors here!

The Family Impact Rationale and Handbook – 2nd Edition
How can policymakers and practitioners view policies, programs, and practices through the lens of family? The Family Impact Rationale and Handbook, coauthored by Center director Sara Benning and designed by MCH student Cassie Mohawk, explains why the family impact lens is important, how it can be used, who would find it useful, and what it can accomplish. In addition, it provides step-by-step procedures and tools for bringing the family impact lens to policy and practice. There are also several other nonpartisan resources, including a family impact toolkit, family impact analyses, checklists, procedures, and discussion starters that can be used by anyone interested in supporting and strengthening families in all their diversity across the lifespan.

“Not Feeling Like Myself” in Perimenopause — What Does it Mean? Observations from the Women Living Better survey | The Journal of the Menopause Society
“Not feeling like myself” (NFLM) is a phrase used by midlife women on the path to menopause. It was noted in comments to the Women Living Better (WLB) website, and it arises regularly in the clinical setting. A Google search of “I don't feel like myself” and “perimenopause” yielded 5.3 million results. A scan of the first several pages suggests that results fall in two broad categories: healthcare provider efforts to recruit new patients by demonstrating an understanding of how women feel and women, themselves, lamenting the difficulty of the menopausal transition (MT) on blogs and podcasts and in mainstream media. Despite this widespread usage, no attention has been devoted to clarifying the meaning of NFLM in relationship to perimenopause. This study aimed to understand the meaning of the phrase NFLM when used by those on the path to menopause by exploring the relationship between symptoms reported by ratings of NFLM.
