April Family Update
The Learning Center 2024
Spring is Finally Here!
Greetings TLC Families.
Spring is finally here! I hope you were able to relax and spend some time with your family over Spring Break. I know the weather didn't cooperate completely, but I still found some time to relax and get outside with my family.
Believe it or not, we only have 35 days left in this school year. Please make sure you have access to Canvas, EOS, and Infinite Campus, so you can support your student behaviorally and academically. If you need assistance or have questions, please access our school website or call the school @ 381-0597.
Please mark your calendars for the following events in April. We will send out more detailed information as we get closer to each event:
April 11th--Title I Open Spaces Night (Virtual) from 5:00-7:00
April 18th and 19th--Community Portfolio Evaluation
April 22nd-23rd--MAP Math Test (Schoolwide)
April 24th--Senior Math Kyote Test
April 25th-26th--MAP Reading Test (Schoolwide)

Finally, through our partnership with God's Pantry for the Kids Can Hunger Food Drive, we raised $200 online and collected over 600lbs of canned goods for needy families in Lexington. The junior class won our schoolwide competition by a significant margin.
Please take the time to nominate a staff member that made a difference for your student(s):

TLC School Improvement Update
ATTENDANCE--We want every student to have a minimum of 85% attendance for the entire school year.
ACADEMIC GROWTH--We want every student to meet or exceed their MAP Reading and Math Growth Goal.
LIFE READINESS--We want every student to meet the requirement for post secondary readiness according to the Kentucky Department of Education.
Attendance
Last year our average daily attendance was 79.96% and this year our average daily attendance is around 81.35%. We are proud of this progress, but we still have work to do, since our goal is 85%. The 9th graders (86%) and the 12th graders (83%) still have the highest percentage of attendance out of all the grade levels.
We are currently reviewing individual student absences and reaching out to families. Students who are are not meeting the expectations of this contract will be placed on contract review. We will set goals with the student and the family in order to determine if TLC is the best placement for the student.
How can you help?
- Don't hesitate to reach out to your student's Advisory teacher if they are struggling with attendance. We are here to support you.
- Make sure excuse notes are returned within three days of your student's return to school.
- Refer your student for mental health services if that is affecting their attendance: Counseling Consent Form
- Help your student create healthy habits with regards to diet, sleep, and exercise.
- Schedule appointments on days in which school is not in session. Here is the FCPS calendar.
Academic Growth
We have completed our Fall and Winter MAP tests in Reading and Math. As I mentioned in a previous update, the MAP test is an adaptive test that measures a student's academic growth compared to other students around the nation. If you need more information about he MAP test, explore the following resource: MAP Information for Families
Now we are preparing students to take their Spring MAP tests in Math and Reading. The MAP window will be open April 22nd through May 3rd. The Spring MAP tests are extremely important for our student and our school. These tests will demonstrate each student's growth this year in Math and Reading.
Students will be setting goals in their English and Math classes before the test. Students will be rewarded and recognized for meeting or exceeding their individual growth goals.
How can you help?
- Ask your student about their MAP test experience.
- Ask your student about their MAP goals.
- Reach out to your student's Advisory teacher if they are struggling academically.
- Make sure your student is attending after school tutoring if they need extra support: TLC ESS Schedule.
- Discuss test taking strategies with your student.
Life Readiness
All students at TLC have been working on their student portfolio the entire school year. Each student's portfolio is a Google Site that celebrates all of their achievements and growth at TLC.
In less than a month we have our Spring Community Portfolio Evaluation, and our students need input, feedback, and guidance. Please spread the word that we need community members to work with our students on April 18th (from 9:00 am -11:00 am and 1:00 pm-3:30 pm) and on April 19th (from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm) at TLC:
