KMS Friday Principal's Press

Friday, January 31, 2025
Happy Friday! Here is some important information from KMS:
A Message from KHS Principal Dr. DeAngelis
Greetings 8th graders - the class of 2029! I am writing to share that it is time for your Grade 8 students to think about transitioning to Kennett High School and creating their 9th-grade schedules. Teachers are currently in the process of making recommendations for your child in the core subject areas of Math, Science, History, and ELA. On Monday, February 10th, the window for elective choices begins. The window will remain open until 2/23/25. Please visit the Kennett High School Educational Planning Guide, which thoroughly describes all courses offered at the high school. It also specifies which electives are available to incoming Grade 9 students.
Please review the entire Planning Guide with your student. Pay special attention to the electives pages. Ms. Boder, the 8th grade school counselor, will be joining American History classes during the electives selection window to give informational sessions on choosing electives and to help students make their electives choices in Skyward. All students should choose their electives within the scheduled 2/10-2/23/24 window.
Again, the window selection will only remain open until February 23rd. Please know that Ms. Boder will be available to assist your child in the selection process and answer any questions you may have.
-Dr. Lorenzo DeAngelis | KHS Principal
KMS Robotics Team Shines in Competition!
The KMS robotics team “Team ShroomBotics” competed in the their first competition earlier this month. They placed sixth overall in qualifiers out of more than thirty teams and ended up being an alliance captain in the tournament. While we didn’t make it the finals of the tournament, our students did extremely well competing against 7-12th grades teams across the state. We are extremely proud of their quick thinking and grace under pressure having to repair and adapt the robot with sometimes only minutes to spare. Go Shoombotics!!
The team has their next (and likely final) competition of this season on Saturday, February 15th at Coatesville Area Senior High School and would love to have some Kennett Blue come out to support. Robotics Coach Chris plans to continue holding meetings with the team through the Spring to continue to work on developing our skills and it would be a great time to have potential new members come and learn.
If you are interested in learning more or your child is interested in joining, please email Coach Chris at chris@theschuetzfamily.com. Coach Chris and the Shroombotics team will be on display at KCSD STEM Night on March 6.
Marking Period 2 Report Cards and Benchmark Scores
Report cards, honor roll certificates, and winter benchmark scores were distributed to students earlier this week. A reminder that report cards are always accessible in Skyward. Regarding benchmark data, our aim is to maximize transparency regarding your child's progress. We value tangible evidence that your child is growing. As a school, our benchmark data is beyond encouraging. Click here to read more about how KMS uses benchmark data. If you have questions about your child's benchmark data, we encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher.
KMS Needs Lacrosse Coaches
KMS is searching for two girl's LAX coaches and one boy's LAX coach. If you are interested, please apply in KCSD's TalentED portal. Spring sports will begin on March 12th, 2025.
6th Grade Science is Busy Learning!
Students in 6th grade Science just began a new Twig Module called Model Earth. Students will learn about how climates vary from region to region around the world. This week, students explored how places on Earth receive different amounts of sunlight by carrying out an investigation using flashlights, beads, markers, and grid paper with lines of latitude highlighting the equator and poles.
In addition, students were introduced to a Climate Challenge – students will work in seven different teams and research a specific continent. They will apply their knowledge of factors that affect climate to their continent and research and build a 3-D physical model that shows the location, atmospheric, and oceanic factors that affect the climate of the continent. See below!
Next Month...It's Time to Party! KMS is having a Glow Dance!
On Friday, February 21st, KMS will host our 3rd annual Glow Dance! We had over 500 students attend last year and it was a blast. We cannot make this happen without your help as volunteers and with donations. Please see below for more information and for volunteer & donation signs ups.
KCSD Chromebook Protection Plan for $50
In 2025, technology plays an important role in your child's learning. Protect your student's district issued learning device with our comprehensive Chromebook Protection Plan, designed to shield families from unexpected repair costs. Our affordable coverage ensures that accidental damage, drops, spills, and screen cracks won't interrupt your child's education or create financial stress. This $50 plan provides 100% coverage for repairs or replacement of the Chromebook that would otherwise be the responsibility of the student and/or parent/legal guardian.
Need A Winter Coat?
We are excited to announce that Kennett Consolidated School District, in partnership with Operation Warm, has acquired a supply of brand-new winter coats. Keeping our students warm during the winter months is essential for their health and well-being. As students grow each year, finding a properly fitting winter coat can be a challenge, and our goal is to ensure that every student has access to one.
If you are interested in your student receiving a winter coat, please complete the linked form [Coat Request Form].
Please note: We will fulfill requests on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot guarantee that the specific coat size your student needs will be available at the time we receive your request. If we are unable to provide your student with a coat in the requested size, we will offer the closest available size until we run out of coats. If we cannot provide a coat for your student, we will contact you directly.
Thank you for your support in helping us keep our students warm this winter!
Two Faces To Get To Know Better:
Meet Ms. Oakes (far left in picture) and Ms. Church (Second from left) - two of KMS's CCRES Instructional Aides (IAs). Ms. Oakes and Ms. Church support KMS teachers by reinforcing instruction, assisting students with assignments, and helping manage classroom operations. They work closely with students, providing one-on-one guidance and small group instruction to ensure understanding of lesson materials. Additionally, instructional aides assist with administrative tasks such as preparing materials, maintaining records, and ensuring a safe and organized learning environment.
Ms. Oakes has been in KCSD for 15 years, having worked at both New Garden Elementary and currently Kennett Middle School. Ms. Oakes truly enjoys working with students, seeing them in the "ah ha!" moments, and the student body in general. Ms. Church has been working in KCSD for 18 years! She is what we call a triple stakeholder - lives in Kennett, works in Kennett, and is the parent of a KCSD graduate.
In her free time, Ms. Church loves riding bikes and exploring our local White Clay Creek State Park. Ms. Oakes enjoys reading and going to the beach!
Thank you Ms. Church and Ms. Oakes for all you do at KMS!
