The OMS Community Newsletter
October 7 - 11, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear OMS Community,
We are recognizing various causes with our school community during the month of October.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many wear pink to spread awareness. The OMS Student Council planned a Spirit Day on October 18th to spread awareness. Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink!
October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month. Rett Syndrome is a very rare, non-inherited genetic disorder that can cause difficulty eating, breathing, walking, and talking. Students learned about Rhett Syndrome Awareness Month during our morning announcements. During the month of October, we think about members of the OMS community whose families may be affected by Rett Syndrome. Some of our OMS staff are pictured here wearing purple ribbons in honor of Rhett Syndrome Awareness.
National Bullying Prevention Month is also observed in October to raise awareness about bullying, promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. School counselors and administrators will be doing team assembly meetings later this month with all grades. Students will learn what the differences are between being rude, being mean, and being a bully, what constitutes bullying and harassment, what violates some one's civil rights, how to report issues and the importance of being an upstander in our school community.
Have a great three-day weekend!
Sincerely,
Katrina Crowley
OMS Principal

We are looking for local veterans to participate in our annual Veterans Day Assembly. If you are a veteran or know a local veteran, please see the information below.
Science Spotlight
We are currently in our second year with our partnership with MassBioEd and their Access Program. This program brings scientists, teachers, and administrators together to provide hands-on life science lab lessons and career experiences for middle school students.
In September, scientists from MassBioEd went to all of our science classes to teach a nature of science lesson. Grade 8 classes welcomed them for an electrophoresis lab. Students practiced using micropipettes to transfer precise amounts of liquids into their gel. After running the electrophoresis unit students we able to make claims about particle size and particle charge of each liquid. These skills will be fuller developed in Biology at SHS.
