Washington Veale Elementary Recognized at Indiana Statehouse
Governor Eric J. Holcomb and Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner recognized educators from 283 schools where at least 95% of students demonstrated reading proficiency in 2024 at a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse on Wednesday.
“Our statewide goal of achieving 95% reading proficiency among Indiana students is ever closer because of the work these schools have done and continue to do everyday,” said Gov. Holcomb. “Reading is foundational to all other educational and quality of life goals we set as a state, and I want to commend the educators at each of the schools honored today for their commitment to a brighter future for our students and the state of Indiana.”
“When it comes to supporting every child to reach their full potential, one of the most important things we can do is teach them to read,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “The ability to read has an impact on students’ academic achievement, as well as their lifelong opportunities. While we must certainly continue to keep our foot on the gas pedal to ensure all students are reading by the end of third grade, today is about celebrating the impactful work of schools, educators, parents and families and communities across Indiana working together for students. Congratulations to all of the schools that hit our shared 95% goal, and let’s keep this positive momentum going for Indiana students!”

16 Students Earn AP Scholar Status at Washington High School
Washington High School has fostered a successful partnership with the University of Notre Dame’s Advanced Placement Teacher Investment Program (AP-TIP) to elevate the professional development and training of our AP educators. Since joining in the fall of 2019, our students have shown remarkable improvement in their AP Exam performance. During the 2023-2024 school year, sixteen Washington High School students were honored as Advanced Placement Scholars for their exceptional achievements.
Taking AP courses in high school offers students significant advantages beyond bolstering college applications. Research indicates that AP courses help students develop critical study habits, time management skills, and the ability to excel in challenging academic settings. Additionally, AP students can earn college credit or placement at a reduced cost, saving both time and money in the long run.
The following WHS students have earned AP Scholar Status:
AP Scholar with Distinction: Awarded to students who achieve an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams.
Xavier Frank, Hallie Hill, Madelyn Kempf, Elijah Parsons
AP Scholar with Honor: Awarded to students who achieve an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
Keegan Dillon, Leyla Gutierrez Calvillo, Eliana Sellers
AP Scholar: Awarded to students who received a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

3rd Grade College Sweatshirt Project!
We have 225 3rd graders this year, and we are planning on giving each one a college sweatshirt for Christmas. This year, we are also asking businesses to donate a sweatshirt with their name or logo on it as well.
This will open up so many conversations about different colleges and local businesses in Washington and all over the country.
How Can You Help?
If you would like to donate money towards this project or purchase a sweatshirt/hoodie for one of our students, please contact us so we can give you the sizes needed.
We would like the sweatshirts to be in our hands no later than Friday, November 1, so we have time to sort and wrap them. Thank you for your continued support!

Online Safety Alert
The Southwestern Indiana Child Advocacy Center Coalition have been made aware of an app that is becoming increasingly popular with kids and teens called Avakin Life. It is a life simulation game similar to Sims, but allows for more private interaction between characters. It is being used by predators to lure kids into being in online “relationships”. Once a connection has been established, the adult will then encourage the child to use another app, such as discord, to share nude pictures and more personal information. While both of these apps have been around for awhile, their usage is growing among kids.
