4-H and Cloverbuds
4-H Club has begun meeting for the year. 4-H is for fourth and fifth graders and Cloverbuds is for kindergarten through third grade. 4-H is a youth development program that provides hands-on learning experiences for young people to develop skills and prepare them for adulthood. 4-H Cloverbuds is a program for young children that is part of the 4-H organization. The program focuses on cooperative learning and developing life skills. The clubs meet once a month during the school day at activity time.
Conservation Camp
On September 6, third graders visited the annual Conservation Camp at Sugar Hollow Park. The focus of the camp was to learn about conservation of natural resources, wildlife, and water management. Third graders spent the day rotating amongst stations. Each station involved hands on activities such as the touching of animal hides, learning about the regions of Virginia by placing manipulatives on a map, and discovering a beaver's physical and behavioral adaptations by dressing up a volunteer student as a beaver. Greendale students had a picnic at the park and were able to enjoy a short time playing on the playground. The day was adventurous, and students left with a greater knowledge of their role in conservation.
Grandparent's Breakfast
On September 12, Greendale Elementary hosted over 140 grandparents for a special breakfast. Visitors and students enjoyed a delicious gravy and biscuit breakfast provided by our wonderful PTO.
Washington County Schools Talent Showcase at the Fair
The Washington County Schools Talent Showcase at the Fair was held during the Washington County Fair on September 13. The showcase featured talent from each of the schools in Washington County. Two students represented Greendale Elementary School exceptionally well. Scarlett Kegley played "When the Saints Go Marching" on the piano and Georgia Malone sang "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton.
One School One Book
This year for our One School One Book, we read Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. Clementine is a book about a third grade girl named Clementine who has a difficult week. The book is told from Clementine's perspective and explores her challenges at home and school. As a culmination activity for finishing the book, students made and wore Clementine hats. The hats were decorated with items that makes the wearer special or that the wearer enjoys.

During this event, families were introduced to the school staff and faculty, heard a presentation about this year's theme and focus from Mr. Colston, and had to opportunity to visit classrooms to see students work and talk to teachers.
