Wildcat Weekly 10-21-2024
Notes from Sandie
It would be an understatement to say our staff has endured a number of changes this year. Some of the changes were planned for, but many of these changes were totally unexpected. Change happens. There is absolutely no guarantee things will stay the same. In fact, when things stay exactly the same as they have always been is when we as humans become complacent. I'm not saying we should create change for the sake of change, but when unexpected changes happen, it is the perfect opportunity to look at things and decide if we need to make additional changes that would benefit our students, staff, and families.
As we tell our students, things happen, but the key is how we handle the changes. Some handle change better than others. However, we handle change, it is important for all of us to be patient, kind, and respectful to those who need a little more time in accepting the change and/or adjusting or doing what they need to do to move forward.
To quote Helen Keller...A bend in the road is not the end of the road...unless you fail to make the turn.
Thanks for making the turn. We need each and every one of you at RRO and are glad each of you are here.
Have a great week ahead!
Best,
Sandie

Update: Alternate/Emergency Arrival and Dismissal Plans
Arrival
Students who walk or get dropped-off will be welcomed into the hallways from their entry door OR the door on Williams at 8:20 AM.
Those students entering through the Williams doors will be sent to their grade level hallway.
The teacher on duty should stand at the entry door to make sure those students that arrive to that door are able to get into the building. At the first and third grade doors, the 5th grade Service Squad members can help out.
Bus riders will enter through the Knudsen doors and will go to their hallway and wait with the other students.
ALL students, bus riders and drop-offs/walkers should remain in the hallways until 8:40 AM and then they may go into the classrooms.
Dismissal
Students will be dismissed by grade level.
Bus students may need to wait in the hallway leading to the Knudsen doors.
Pick-ups/Walkers will all be dismissed out the front (Williams) doors.
All students will be dismissed in the following order:
Grade 2
Grade 3
Grade 4
Grade 1
Grade 5
We will make an announcement for each grade level to start walking down. At least one teacher/staff member should lead the grade level out to the Williams exit.
Teacher Corner
CA-60
If you look at the contents of a CA-60 of one of your students, please make sure you sign the inside sheet of the CA-60. If the sheet is missing, please let Diane know and she will put one in for you.
Please remember you are NOT to look at a CA-60 of a student who is not on your caseload or you are not directly teaching that student. If, for example, you want to look at the sibling of one of your current students, please talk to me about getting the information for which you are seeking. Looking in the CA-60 of a student you are not teaching is a FERPA violation.
Six Techniques to Reduce Dead Time in the Classroom
1 - Build your arsenal of routines and activities from general purpose activities that apply to various subjects or teaching situations to specific content activities that support learning by tapping multiple intelligences and generate engagement beyond listening and recall.
2 - Begin class and lessons with a warm-up.
3 - Instead of letting dead time dominate transition time, use movement to keep students focused.
4 - Cultivate your engagement meter. Always be aware when students are paying strong attention and displaying full engagement. Remember, your goal is 100 percent engagement with 100 percent of your students all the time.
5 - It's crucial to prevent dead time when giving instructions. It is advantageous to give this time an important name and there are many ways to get it - Example: "Crucial Moment" and requesting complete attention.
6 - To maintain active learning until the end, introduce journal or blog writing. This is a great time for students to use the time for summarizing, sharing, and reflecting.
Wednesday, October 23
We will meet in the CAT Lab for our one hour meeting from 3:05 - 4:05 PM.
Watch for an e-mail with specifics for the meeting.
Thank You....
- to everyone who has been mentoring, coaching, and assisting our new teachers as they get acclimated to RRO. We are so blessed to have such a caring, patient, and helpful staff!
- to Nanci Roesler for agreeing to mentor Kari Briggs as Kari completes her student teaching this year in Nanci's classroom. Keri is part of the West Michigan Teacher Collaborative and will log her student teaching, observations, and hours doing her job as an outstanding LRE Aide.
- Jerry Hedrick and Julie Plunkett who have been doing a great deal of the "heavy lifting" these past few weeks with all the changes in staff. We appreciate both of you!
