Our Lady of the Cape Primary School
Newsletter - 15th August 2024
We pray:
Ever-generous God,
You inspired St Mary MacKillop
to live her life faithful
to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and constant in bringing hope and encouragement
to those who were disheartened, lonely, or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
and joining with St Mary MacKillop,
we ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too,
like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage,
trust, and openness.
Ever-generous God, hear our prayer.
We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Feast of the Assumption and Mission Market
On Friday this week, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption, with key learning and prayer about this special feast day, followed by Mission Markets and other activities.
CEWA Executive Visit
Today, Dr Tony Curry, Director of People Capability and Wellbeing, visited OLC. We enjoyed showing him around our school, including our amazing new Early Learning Centre, and talking about what makes our school a unique place of learning.
P&F Meeting
Our meeting for this term was held yesterday. Next meeting will be on Wednesday 30 October at 9.00am, in the Staff Room.
School Advisory Council Meeting
Our SAC also met yesterday. Next meeting will be on 6 November at 5.00pm. The Annual School Community Meeting will be held on Monday 11th November at 5.00pm in the School Hall.
Enrolment for Pre-Kindergarten (Three-year-olds) for next year
If you have a child who is turning 3 between now and the end of the year, or before the 30 June next year, they can be in our Pre-Kindergarten class for next year. Please contact the office for an enrolment form or spread the word to family and friends. Please note that enrolment in our three-year-old program is independent of our regular Kindergarten program.
Cultural Learning
As part of our Cultural Learning Program, the Year 5 classes will spend two days out of the school on their Cultural Nature Challenge days.
School Uniforms
As we transition to a single uniform for girls, with the same dress in summer and winter, there are some concerns about maintaining the standard of our uniform. If girls need additional warmth, black tights may be worn with all-black shoes. Please note that ‘leggings’ worn with socks are not part of the school uniform, either on formal uniform days or on sports uniform days. For additional warmth on sports days, tracksuit pants, available through the uniform shop, may be worn by girls and boys. We are currently exploring a teal ‘jumper’ made with a poly-cotton blend, that is warm but not itchy. A reminder that the rugby jumper is only for sports days. A reminder that shoes with the formal uniform need to be all black, no white soles or logos.
School uniforms instill a sense of pride and belonging and are an important way to show that we value our community. Thank you to parents for assisting us to maintain a respectful standard.
Please refer to photos below, and check with the classroom teacher if you are not sure.

Book Week 2024
On Wednesday 21 August we have our Book Week dress-up day and parade. We look forward to seeing the creativity of our students displayed in their choice of book character costumes. There will be a costume parade in the morning at 8.50am, straight after morning drop-off. Have fun planning costumes - remember characters must be in a book and recycling is encouraged. As always, thank you for your support of your children.
Please note that because Wednesday is not a Kindy day, the Kindy classes will have their dress-up day on Friday 23 August instead, beginning with a short costume parade.
Cyber Safety – Kids Messenger
From time to time, we hear that students are accessing Social Media, such as ‘Messenger Kids’. Although this is outside of school time, it sometimes impacts on the school day, as students may come to school feeling upset by messages received from their friends. Please continue to monitor device usage at home, know what your children are using, for how long and when. Please have conversations with your children about the impact of their words.
Click on the link below to read some more information from ‘Common Sense Media’ to inform your decision to allow your child access to Social Media.
Canteen
A reminder that next week will be the last week that the canteen will be operating for three days. After Friday 23 August, Pippa Walsh will no longer be working in the canteen as she prepares to welcome her third baby. We wish her well and thank her for her work in the canteen this year. Starting on Friday 30 August, we welcome Sara Drmota!
Beginning in Week 6, the canteen will only be open on Fridays for lunch orders only, no recess sales. Please check the online menu.
P&F Support for our Cultural Program
As you know, each class has a Flora and Fauna Totem that they learn about to increase their cultural knowledge. The P&F used funds raised on Crazy Hair Day at the end of last term to purchase a mini-mascot for classes. We thank the P&F for helping to support our cultural program.
Afternoon In-car Pick-up
During winter, when we have the inevitable rain at 3.00pm, it is really difficult to see who is in the cars coming through in-car pick-up, due to the glare and rain on windscreens. It would greatly assist the staff to call students for their parents if the family name was clearly displayed for us to read. It you don’t have a family name card, please contact the office, or you are welcome to make your own! Our parents are particularly helpful by remaining in cars to ensure an efficient process and safety for all. Thank you for your help with this.
Wellbeing Week
Last week was Wellbeing week. During Wellbeing week, the staff were encouraged to have a focus on their own wellbeing and were teaching the students some techniques to look after themselves as well. All classes spent some time in quiet reflection with ‘Smiling Mind’ meditations before lunch. Students were encouraged to have a focus on gratitude, with journalling or drawing depending on their age. We had different activities during the week, including stretching, physical activities, chalk drawings and buddy-fun. There were lots of staff challenges throughout the week, that gave us lots of laughs. As a staff group, it is really important to us to have a focus on looking after ourselves, so we are in a good position to look after your children.
Uniform Shop Volunteer
We are still looking for a volunteer to help run the Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop is open on a Wednesday from 8.20am - 9am. Please see the Admin Office if you would like to volunteer. We very thankful to Anna Rowe for her dedicated service in our uniform shop.
Toilet Facilities
If adults need to use the toilets when you are at school, please use the adult facilities at the back of the hall, rather than the student toilets. Thanks very much.
Have a wonderful week!
May God bless you

OLC Sports Faction Carnival
The OLC Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 12th September (Week 9). We will be holding jumps and throws over the next few weeks as part of the student's sport lessons (pending weather). More information regarding the Carnival will be made available closer to the date.

Waste Free Wednesday
The Eco Warriors really care about the environment and we would like to encourage OLC students and families to reduce plastic and waste.
We would like to have Waste Free Wednesdays, starting from next week. Please make sure your lunchbox is free of rubbish and plastic wrappers.
The Eco Warriors will come to classrooms before recess to see which class has the most waste-free lunchboxes. At the end of term, the year group that has had the least waste, will get some extra playtime.
Care for our environment and think about creating less waste by having your lunch in containers, rather than wrappers. Thank you
RE NEWS
OLC FEAST DAY AND MISSION MARKETS
Tomorrow we are celebrating our school Feast Day for the Assumption of Mary. This is a day for appreciating and understanding Mary as our Patroness, understanding, and celebrating the Feast of the Assumption, growing awareness of those less fortunate in the world, and demonstrating our capacity to “give” as an antidote to need. Last year we raised over $2000 for Catholic Mission Australia’s support for the Ukraine. This year funds raised will go to Catholic Mission Australia for various countries in need.
Students are asked to wear their sports uniforms for the day.
Classes will participate in a whole school liturgy at 10.00am. From midday until 1.00pm, we hold our fundraising market stalls and outdoor activities, with the help of the Year 6 students. Parents are also welcome to attend this with their child/ren if they would like to come along.
Our stalls are focused on the fun that comes from participation, rather than the acquisition of “things” to take home. This comes from a sustainability perspective and a desire to minimise packaging and collection of items that essentially end up as landfill in the long run.
Activities on the day include the following:
To assist, we are asking that children bring money that they have earned from doing jobs around the house so that they can understand the value of the money they are donating. We ask that the children bring no more than $20.00 maximum (in coins please) for the day. It helps to have coins contained in a clearly labelled snap lock bag with your child's name and class in case it gets dropped on the tour around the school. Classroom teachers will be explaining how we make Jesus Real by helping those less fortunate and in need by raising money. We look forward to a fun filled day celebrating our wonderful school.
Music News
Recently, the OLC Choir combined forces with the Cornerstone Choir for a singing party in the hall. The students’ voices sounded incredible together as they sang an range of 2 part harmonies in preparation for the One Big Voice Concert. Afterwards, some time was enjoyed meeting new friends and sharing pizzas. We cannot wait to join Cornerstone at the Arena for a spectacular show next Thursday 22nd August! Choir parents, please ensure that permission forms have been returned for the day. We look forward to this very special event for our choir.
