Health Connection
Wellness for the Sioux City Community School District
May 2023
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Make it Ok
It’s OK to have mental health needs - many of us do. 1 in 5 people will have some kind of mental heath challenge in their lifetime, and many don't get the help they need.
Stop the Stigma! Stigma perpetuates misconceptions and false beliefs about what a mental illness really is. Mental illnesses are more common than diabetes, yet we still struggle with talking about them compared to a physical illness. You can stop the stigma and create positive change by learning the tips for talking to someone with a mental health condition.

Just starting a conversation, can make a real difference in someone's life.
5 Ways to start a conversation:
- Hey, we haven't talked in a while. How are you?
- Are you Ok? You don't seem like yourself lately.
- Hey, you seemed frustrated today, I'm here for you.
- Seems like somethings up. Do you wanna talk about what's going on?
- I'm worried about you and would like to know what I can do to help.
