Message from the President

Welcome to a new and exciting year of learning!


For the past 10 years, NTCTELA has provided teachers and leaders with the resources and expertise to support and inspire their students and each other. NTCTELA’s goal is to keep members informed on current literacy practices and professional development opportunities.


We partner with Warren Instructional Network, QEP Books, and Monkey and Dog Books to provide resources that support your instruction.


The purpose of the Council shall be to bring together at intervals the English language arts and reading teachers of North Texas for mutual benefit through professional development opportunities focusing on ways to improve the teaching of English language arts and reading, and to stimulate study and investigation.


Monthly board meetings, posted on our website http://www.ntctela.org, are open to all members. We welcome your input and feedback as we plan activities and the annual conference. You can contact board members at Board@NTCTELA.org. (make sure meetings are posted on website)


When you attend our annual conference, your membership is renewed automatically. If you are unable to attend our June conference and want to continue your membership, please contact, Carolyn Wright, Vice President of Membership at Board@NTCTELA.org

Messages from the Field: To Flip or Not to Flip? By Lacey Edley

To flip or not to flip? There’s no question about it, flipping your lessons is a must! The flipped classroom model has been around for quite some time, but educators around the globe are finally catching on. This model involves sending video lessons to students to watch at home and then allowing students to complete the actual “homework” assignment in class, along with their teachers and peers. This model gives students the support needed when they don’t understand. It also allows more time in the classroom to extend the learning for students who need more. When teaching and learning in the traditional classrooms, teachers can repeat the information, but more than likely they move on. With this model, students can rewind the video several times until they understand.


I start off each year with a flipped lesson just for parents! This lesson teaches them what the instructional method is and how it will strengthen their child’s reading comprehension, writing techniques, grammar concepts, and vocabulary development. The parents are usually a little apprehensive at first, but after a few lessons, they express how much they enjoy watching them.


Since flipping my lessons, I have seen great gains in my students’ abilities to connect new information with previously taught concepts. Just last week I was teaching a grammar lesson when a child raised her hand to comment that the sentence was written in the first person! We had just had a flipped lesson on first and third person point of view the previous week!


Everyone knows that I’m passionate about creating independent learners that are engaged in the process and have a love for learning! So, if you’re like me, take a risk and flip out with a flipped lesson!



What kids are saying….

Judith: I love flipped lessons because they’re short and it’s like taking Mrs. Edley home with you! Instead of learning at school, you learn at home.


Jackie: I get to see Mrs. Edley at my home on the computer and the lesson only takes about 5-7 minutes.


Moses: You get to watch the lessons over and over again.


Abby: I like watching the flipped lessons at home. Sometimes my mom watches with me and she learns too!

Lacey Edley, author of this month's Messages from the Field is a graduate of Texas Woman's University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education with an emphasis in Reading and Literacy. She has been teaching since 1997. Lacey has taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. Currently, she teaches 4th grade at Lakeland Elementary in Lewisville ISD.

As a professional development coordinator for the Conway, New Hampshire, School District, Penny Kittle acts as a K-12 literacy coach and directs new-teacher mentoring. In addition, she teaches writing at Conway’s Kennett High School and in the Summer Literacy Institutes at the University of New Hampshire. Penny is the author and coauthor of numerous books with Heinemann including Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers; Children Want to Write (coauthored with Thomas Newkirk); Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing, which won the 2009 James N. Britton Award from NCTE; The Greatest Catch,and Public Teaching. Penny coauthored two books with Donald H. Graves —Inside Writing and Quick Writes.

NTCTELA Teachers of Excellence Award

Start thinking about a colleague, a friend, or a mentor teacher who you would like to nominate for NTCTELA Teachers of Excellence.


NTCTELA awards one Teacher of Excellence award to an outstanding elementary, middle, and high school teacher who has made a significant contribution to the teaching of English Language Arts.


Award winners receive an all-expense paid trip to either the IRA (International Reading Association), TCTELA (Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts), or NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) annual conference.


Winners will be announced at the annual NTCTELA Conference on June 8, 2018 at the Hurst Conference Center.


Additional nomination information will be forthcoming.
