Garfield September Newsletter
Believe - Be Brave - Achieve
It’s hard to believe that the first few weeks of the school year have already flown by! It has been wonderful to see the school buzzing with energy, laughter, and learning. I want to take a moment to share some highlights from our start of the year and provide you with a few important updates.
A Great Start
Our students are settling in beautifully, and it’s been a joy to see them reconnect with friends and make new ones. Teachers have been busy establishing routines, setting expectations, and diving into the curriculum. The positive atmosphere in our classrooms and hallways is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and families.
Sincerely,
Carmen Schaefer, Principal
Our Motto!
If you plan on your student(s) eating breakfast, it does start at 7:25 when doors open. Please have them here in a timely manner so that they have time to eat, and get to class on time.
Meal Prices
Garfield Families--Meal Prices are below for full pay and reduced. A milk always comes with a meal, but An EXTRA milk for any students is 50 cents no matter their status. This could be a student getting a milk with their sack lunch, or a student getting an additional milk with their meal.
If your student has a balance, please pay it off, or pay it a little a time. You can pay in office by cash, check or card. You can also pay through Skyward Family Access. You should be receiving emails about the balance. We are here for any questions or concerns!
mySAEBRS Survey
*Opt-in letter coming home soon.
3rd - 5th
Next month, grades 3 - 5 will be given the opportunity to take the mySAEBRS survey. This survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. mySAEBRS (my Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief, norm-referenced self-assessment tool for screening students to identify those who are at risk for social-emotional behavior (SEB) concerns.
We believe this survey is a valuable tool because mySAEBRS can be used to identify students who are at risk for social, academic, and emotional behaviors. By evaluating in which of the three specific domains a student is at risk, we may determine what type of support is most appropriate and which social-emotional behaviors should be prioritized through intervention. For instance, if a student is only at risk for emotional concerns, then we may decide to target emotional behaviors via the application of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs such as small group instruction.
A letter will be coming home soon. Please read it over, fill it our, and have them return to their classroom teacher.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Social Skills of the Week:
As part of our commitment to fostering positive social interactions and personal growth, we focus on a different social skill each week. These skills are discussed during our morning meetings and are practiced throughout the day in various classroom activities.
Below are the social skills we will be targeting for the month of September:
Week 1: Asking for Help
- Look at the person.
- Ask if the person has time to help you.
- Clearly explain the kind of help you need.
- Thank the person for helping.
Week 2: Getting the Teachers Attention
- Look at the teacher.
- Raise you hand and stay calm.
- Wait until the teacher says your name.
- Ask your question.
Week 3: Accepting No
- Look at the person
- Say, "OK".
- Stay calm.
- If you disagree, ask later.
Week 4: Responding to Teasing
- Remain calm, but serious.
- Assertively ask the person to stop teasing.
- If teasing doesn't stop, ignore the other person and remove yourself.
- If the teasing stops, thank the other person for stopping and explain how the teasing makes you feel.
- Report continued teasing to an adult.
Please take a moment to ask your child about what they have learned each week. Your support at home will reinforce the skills we practice in class and help your child become a more effective communicator and a caring member of our community..
