AMS Weekly Update
Week of Monday, September 9 - Friday, September 13, 2024
Dear Adams Middle School Families,
This week, our students participated in grade level meetings where we covered a range of important topics, including tardies, our new electronics policy, the eagerly anticipated PBIS Store, upcoming events, and, of course, the vital importance of staying on top of their grades.
I was incredibly impressed with the students’ attentiveness and the thoughtful questions they asked during our discussions. It’s clear that they are engaged and committed to making this school year a success!
In addition to our academic focus, we’re also kicking off a fantastic season for our student-athletes. Boys soccer, girls JV and Varsity volleyball, and cross country all began this week. The energy and enthusiasm on the fields and courts have been inspiring, and we’re looking forward to a great season filled with teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit.
One of the highlights we’re all looking forward to is the launch of our PBIS Store in October. Through our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students will have the opportunity to earn points throughout the day by demonstrating our core values of being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. These points can then be redeemed at our PBIS Store, giving students a tangible way to be rewarded for their positive behavior.
We believe in celebrating our students’ achievements and efforts, so each month, we’ll be recognizing those who meet our criteria of having 4 or fewer tardies, passing all their classes, and maintaining a suspension-free record. These celebrations are our way of showing students that we see and appreciate their hard work, dedication, and the positive choices they make every day.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students' success. Together, we can make this school year truly outstanding!
Wishing you all a wonderful and restful weekend!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Bukosky
Principal, Adams Middle School

Counseling Department
Welcome back, Eagles!
The Counseling department consists of two counselors: Ms. Lentz and Mr. Beebe.
Ms. Lentz’s caseload includes all students with the last name A-K, and Mr. Beebe’s caseload includes all students with the last name L-Z.
The counseling department has been working diligently over the past few weeks to ensure all students have a complete schedule and to assist new students at Adams. There were many staffing and class changes this school year, and we appreciate your support. In September, we will do brief classroom presentations and introductions to all grade levels. Your student can sign up to meet with their counselor on the student hub or by emailing us. Ms. Lentz also works “B” lunch, so all 6th grade students see her at lunch daily.
Wayne-Westland collaborates with Care Solace to provide mental health services by qualified therapists. If you or your student is interested, please reach out to us, and we can submit a “warm handoff” to Care Solace to assist in finding a mental health provider who matches your needs.
September is also suicide prevention month. Please see Care Solace’s community resource regarding suicidal warning signs. The resource also provides direct contact information for Care Solace.
The 988 Lifeline also provides 24/7, free, confidential support for distressed people. Information about 988 is also included on the back of every student ID, as required by Michigan law. https://988lifeline.org/
Our contact information is included if you need to reach your student’s counselor. Our priority during the school day is providing support to our students and teachers. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept walk-in parent meetings. However, we are available to parents/guardians via email, phone call, or by appointment. Please reach out to us, and we are happy to help!

Art Class
We are excited to share that students in grades 6 through 8 will be diving into an engaging exploration of the Elements of Art in their art classes this year. This foundational unit will introduce your child to the fundamental building blocks of visual design, including line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. Understanding these elements is essential for creating and appreciating art, as they provide the tools to express ideas and interpret visual information. Through various hands-on projects and creative exercises, students will develop a deeper appreciation for art and enhance their ability to produce thoughtful and visually compelling artwork. We look forward to seeing their artistic skills and enthusiasm grow as they explore these core concepts!
Meet the Art Team! Ms. Martiny teaches Drawing & Painting and Drawing & Printmaking Classes. Mr. Miller teaches 3-D/Ceramics and Multicultural Arts.

Music Class
This month, 6th graders will be introduced to the various instruments that make up a typical concert band. They’ll choose an instrument to learn, while developing important skills like listening, music reading, and fine motor coordination. Our 7th and 8th graders will focus on selecting music that interests them, analyzing music, and preparing pieces for performance.
In October, 7th and 8th graders will attend Middle School Band Night at WMHS, where they’ll have the exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Zebra Marching Band.
Our current instructional focus in the music department is on building strong individual habits. Learning an instrument requires dedication and perseverance, qualities that are valuable in all areas of life. The auditions at the end of the month will help students gain confidence in skills that will serve them in the future, such as job interviews or public speaking.
About the Teacher:
Mr. Martinez is thrilled to enter his 2nd year teaching the music classes at Adams. He hails originally from Holly, MI and has taught as a clinician in over a dozen middle and high schools in southeast Michigan. As a classroom music teacher he has taught in Alabama and Michigan. As a holder of a masters degree in music performance, Mr. Martinez believes in “trusting the process” and cannot wait to see how the students grow in their continued pursuit of music.
You can support your student’s at home learning by making sure they are practicing their instrument at home. Students should practice at least 2.5 hours a week (aggregate) outside of school. It’s best to split this time up into chunks of 15, 30, or 45 minutes at most. A little practice each day is better than a lot of practice only one day.
