GMSD A World of Our Own
4.14.25

Help us cheer our students on.
As TCAP and EOC testing continues, I want to thank you for the incredible support you’re showing our students. From high-fives at drop-off to words of encouragement, I’ve loved seeing families rally around our test-takers.
A quick reminder as we continue testing through next week:
• Get a good night’s sleep.
• Eat a healthy breakfast.
• Trust what you’ve learned—you’ve got this!
Please check your school’s emails for testing schedules and upcoming events.
And thank you to our entire community for showing up—whether it’s at lacrosse games, DolphinFest, or the Houston Classic, there are so many great ways to stay involved.
Reminder: All GMSD schools and offices are closed this Friday.
Let’s keep cheering them on and finish strong!

Superintendent

HHS Knowledge Bowl teams advance to playoffs
Brains were buzzing as two Houston High teams took on the White Station Spring Spartan Showdown in Knowledge Bowl—both made playoffs, and one team placed 3rd out of 18. Huge congrats to Hunter Cowles, Jason Li, Grant Krulewitz, Helen Yarbrough, Kyle Jolly, and the entire team!
Staff Spotlight: Farmington Elementary School Librarian Beverly Pearson
When you picture a school librarian, do you imagine card catalogs and “shhh” signs? Think again. Step inside Beverly Pearson’s world at Farmington Elementary, and you’ll find ChatterPix debates, digital citizenship lessons, and presidential campaigns between a beluga whale and Dory from Finding Nemo.
Beverly’s superpower? Bringing nonfiction to life. “We’ve learned about the invention of chocolate chip cookies, bubblegum, and even ramen noodles,” she shares. “I love helping students find the wonder in real-world stories—and showing them how they connect to our lives today.”
Her lessons are often infused with tech, humor, and heart. Canva, online book platforms, and even ChatGPT help her craft interactive lessons that support students and teachers alike. “I use it all,” she laughs. “It’s not your grandma’s library anymore.”
She also knows how to help kids navigate the modern world. Lessons in digital citizenship—like fact-checking websites and understanding your digital footprint—are staples in her library curriculum.
Outside the library, Beverly and her husband have recently taken up ballroom dancing at Blue Suede Ballroom, owned by a Houston High School parent. “We’ve had so much fun,” she says, and she’s even dreaming up ways to bring dancing into her library lessons.
This spring, Beverly and the rest of GMSD’s librarians are especially excited about a first for the district: a multi-school author visit featuring superstar middle grade author Gordon Korman.
“Our kids are huge fans,” she says. “We’ve got students who’ve read almost everything he’s written, and it’s amazing that they’ll get to meet him in person. It feels like we’re bringing a rock star to our schools—and it’s something they’ll never forget.”
Stay tuned as more GMSD librarians step into the spotlight—and get ready for Gordon Korman’s visit this May!
________________________
GMSD is thrilled to welcome beloved children’s author Gordon Korman for school visits on May 6–7 at Forest Hill, Riverdale, Houston Middle, Farmington, and Dogwood. Students in grades 3–7 (and 8 at RES). To help families prepare, GMSD librarians have curated a list of recommended titles by grade level—books can be pre-purchased for the signing.

From elementary treble choir members to high school band, choir, and orchestra students, GMSD was well-represented in every corner of the conference. These All-State groups feature the best of the best—students who auditioned and earned spots in Tennessee’s top ensembles.
“Lots of great performances and presentations,” said Kevin Carpenter, Director of Bands at Houston High. “I’m super proud of the nine HHS Band participants and the couple dozen MYSP Wind Ensemble musicians that went!”

Houston Choirs to present fourth Masterworks Concert on April 24
Houston Choir's fourth Masterworks Concert this year features Elaine Hagenberg's Illuminare. The Masterworks is a combined concert with Collierville High School's Choirs and past years have featured music from Mozart, Handel, and John Rutter. Illuminare was published in 2022 and is "Elaine’s first extended work, consisting of five movements for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. Using lesser-known sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, the piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace."
>>The concert is Thursday, April 24 at Collierville High School.
