Need to Know
Middle School announces December Veritas Students of the Month: We are proud to honour students each month, nominated by teachers, in recognition of going above and beyond Veritas culture. Congratulations to the students: Marco Bai (7-3), Liam Sarhan (7-4), Dean Hopley (7-1), Owen Burns (7-4), and Matthew Li (8-1). We thank them for their outstanding contributions! Wear your Golden Tie with pride!
Start the new year in Focus! Focus - the MS after-school homework program - resumed on Tuesday, January 7. Students are welcome to join Ms. Schaffer in MS-6 Mondays-Thursdays between 2:50-5:50pm and Fridays between 2:50-4:30pm for supervised homework time! Email Ms. Beech if you are interested in finding out the fees and other details.
Winter boots and clothing - Safety Message: Now that we’re in the season of snow, dress shoes and gym shoes must be kept for indoor use only. Winter boots need to be stored inside lockers during the day and there is a boot mat in each locker for this purpose. Some students may need to clean up their locker to find it! Students playing outside for recess must come prepared to play in any kind of weather. Boots and coats are required and hats, mitts, snow pants and extra socks are recommended for winter recesses. For safety and to keep footwear dry, students are required to take the tunnel instead of the outside crosswalk when travelling between school buildings for classes, phys ed, and intramurals.
School Uniform Reminders: Students have been reminded that Selwyn House has a dress code with specific expectations for how students wear their uniform! They should wear a tie, belt and appropriate shoes every day. Selwyn House sweaters, vests or blazers may accompany the uniform throughout the school day. Selwyn House sweatshirts can be worn at recesses and phys. ed. class times. Please label ALL uniform items so they can be returned to students when they become lost!
The Winter Gryphon Sale (of gently used SHS uniform and apparel) will be held in the Rossy Agora on Wednesday, January 15 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Payment options are cash, debit cards, credit cards or cheques. All proceeds benefit the Nancy Pitfield Scholarship Fund, which helps in offering bursaries to students. If you cannot bring your son, please make sure you bring his measurements!
Grade 8 Science Fair - Thursday, January 23:
Judges Needed for our annual Grade 8 Science Fair. The judging takes place between 8-10:30am in Middle School classrooms. Extensive knowledge of science is not required. If you are interested or have any questions please contact Ms. Haneefa Corbie (corbieh@selwyn.ca).
Project Viewing and Awards - Parents are invited to view the projects in Coristine Hall between 2:50-3:20pm. Awards will be presented at the end of this viewing time.
A Message from the PVA: Dear Selwyn Parents, It's that time of year again! As we prepare for the upcoming Selwyn Staff Appreciation Week 2025, we need your help and support! There are 4 different ways to participate and support this special week that will take place February 11- 14, 2025. Please participate in as many of these as you would like! For more details and links to sign-up, click here.
Contactivity Sign Up this week: Our intergenerational programs with the Contactivity Centre are starting again next week! If you are interested in crafting (MS), digital literacy teaching assistance, or friendly visiting, use this link to sign up for our winter activities.
Clubs and Tutorials - Reminders and Changes: MS Students have the option of attending clubs, intramurals and tutorials any day of the week. Please note that math tutorials are now offered at two different times for both grades - one in person on Tuesdays 3-4pm and one virtually on Monday evenings. Debating club has moved from Thursday after school to Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch hour. Check out the descriptions and calendar to see all the details of what we offer. Students can speak to Mr. Lajoie with their own ideas of new clubs they’d like to start!
Lunar New Year and Black History Month: Do you want to take part in organizing Selwyn’s Lunar New Year or Black History Month celebrations this year? Sign up using this Google Form for Lunar New Year and this Google form for Black History Month. There are roles for everyone - from organizing and performing at assemblies to making posters to helping to run lunchtime activities. *Please note, this is a call for student volunteers. There will be upcoming opportunities for parent volunteers to get involved.*
Ski Club Waitlist: We have many enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders this year! Currently, all of our Ski Club outings are fully registered with a substantial number of students on the waiting list. If you are registered for a trip and know that you will no longer be joining, please email Ms. Schwartz (schwartze@selwyn.ca) as soon as possible to allow for maximum waitlist movement.
