LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
As we soak up the warmer weather, tilt our faces toward the sun, wrap up the school year, and make plans for summer, please remember to check the school calendar and the important dates listed in this newsletter each week. Spring at school is a run of events, trips, celebrations, and ceremonies. It's both joyful and exhausting, and you won't want to miss anything that's meaningful to you.
We will keep updating the newsletter event list, sending parent square messages, and doing our best to keep you informed. Be sure to read school communication, mark your calendars, and hold onto your hats!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
All my best,
Martha

Talent Show 2024 is Wrapped!
The Lopez Island PTSA extends a huge THANK YOU to all the people who made last Saturday's Talent Show and Auction a tremendous success. This was such an amazing community event - from the performers who gave their heart and soul on stage, to the heartwarming generosity of our businesses and artists who donated auction items, and finally to all the folks who packed the house in support of our kids and school. Already looking forward to next year!

Lopez Students Heading to Japan
Lopez and Orcas students will travel to Japan on April 8th with the Japanese Connections program. This year’s study theme is folklore and mythology. The group will visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima, and Miyajima. Students will also visit Lopez Island’s Japanese sister school on Ieshima, a small island in the Inland Sea. Japanese Connections is a one-year course that includes a two-week study tour in Japan, funded by The Freeman Foundation. Director Patricia Burleson and Language/Culture specialist Hugh Burleson have been taking students and teachers to Japan for 20 plus years. Orcas Island Teacher Phil Comito, and Lopez Island Teacher Jaimie Terada will be the teachers this year to help lead students on the study tour. Upon return, students will give a community slideshow presentation about their research projects and experience. This program is offered on a competitive basis to students from Orcas Island and Lopez Island High Schools.

Band & Orchestra Spring Concert
Come support our student musicians on May 9. They have been working hard all year.
Mariachi Band Coming Next Year!
Next year we will begin offering a mariachi class for secondary students! As a Mexican style of music, this class is particularly relevant to our growing Latine population, and offers something for everyone as mariachi includes singing, violin, trumpet, guitar & vihuela (a Mexican guitar), and guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar). Students from band and orchestra can continue building their violin or trumpet technique while others learn guitar skills, and everyone will work on developing a healthy singing voice (y cantando en espanol!) as well as learning music reading and theory as in other music classes.
4th Grade Trip to Olympia
Our fourth graders enjoyed a fun and educational trip to Olympia this week - and got to meet the Governor!
