Ripon Cathedral School Update

We had a wonderful World Book Day with some fabulous costumes, great activities and a little help from parents and carers.

The day started with children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 spending time with family members sharing stories and creating some fabulous new book covers. At the end of the day parents and carers visited classes in Key Stage 2 so that the children could share their learning. Do take a look at the video below which features lots of pictures.

World Book Day - Early Years

In the Early Years, the children and parents enjoyed a special rendition of 'Go Away Bird.' After hearing the story the children, ably assisted by parents and carers, designed new and improved book covers for the story.

World Book Day Year 1

In Year 1 the children explored the first part of the book 'Mrs Armitage and the Big Wave.' Children then continued the story thinking about what might happen next. The class worked with water colours to create their own big wave pictures.

World Book Day - Year 2

The children were studying the books by Anna Llenas: The Colour Monster and The Colour Monster Goes to School. They designed their own colour charts and gave each colour an emotion. The children wrote a story about the first day at colour monster's school and also drew a happy place for our colour monster to visit.

World Book Day Year 3

In Year 3, the children explored the book, 'Dare to Care for a Pet Dragon'. They thought about what their dragon would be like and wrote descriptive poems (see below) using similes and metaphors. Following their poetry, they sketched their dragons and moulded them from clay.

World Book Day Year 4

In Year 4 children explored the book, 'The Day War Came.' They read the story, discussed how the refugee would have felt and looked at some artwork supporting refugees- #3000chairs. The children painted their own empty chair artwork, thinking about the character’s emotions. They used a variety of linguistic features in their letters to a headteacher, encouraging him to give the refugees an education. Some thoughtful and emotive work. Well done, Year 4.

World Book Day Year 5

In Year 5 the children looked at the story, 'The Tear Thief.' They wrote their own section and then created illustrations of tear drops using different colours for different emotions.

World Book Day Year 6

In Year 6 the children explored the text, 'The Arrival' which is a graphic novel about a refugee family. Using the book the children created atmospheric paragraphs to evoke emotion. Later the children created an original piece of art in the style of the book's illustrator.

The children in Year 4 have been learning about using varying shades of a colour to help create shape, texture and shadow. They applied the techniques that they had been learning to their work on World Book day when they created pictures of chairs.

The children in Year 1 worked together to create a very informative worship all about the Donkey Sanctuary. They asked the school questions to see how much they knew about donkeys and produced a fabulous film to inform everyone about the work of the Donkey Sanctuary.

This week we said a big thank you to Mrs Hobbs, who is moving on to a new job. She has been a wonderful asset to our school and supported many children. We will miss her compassion, patience and kindness. All the best Mrs Hobbs in your new role.

As it was World Book Day this week, we asked each class to think about what the world would be like if we didn't have any books.

We had some very thoughtful responses.

'People would not have as much imagination or knowledge. People would have to tell each other stories.' Year 4

'People wouldn't hear stories or know about God, because the Bible is a book.' Year 1

'We wouldn't have libraries to read in and that would make us sad.' Nursery

'There would be less happiness in the world. We could write our own stories though and tell them to people.' Reception

'We would miss bed times stories and there would be no new ideas in the world.' Year 3

'People would not know about things as nothing would be written down and we would not be able to use books to help us look up information.' Year 6

'We wouldn't be able to tell fiction stories and if we wanted to know about the rest of the world we would have to travel there to learn about the places.' Year 5

'We could use computers to record information and online information cannot be burnt.' Year 5

'The world would be a boring place and no one would learn anything. It would be chaos without books.' Year 2

Nursery

Jack for showing great perseverance in his cutting and mark making.

Reception

Aurora for challenging herself in all areas of the classroom, especially her writing.

Year 1

Felix for listening to and responding to feedback with your writing. Felix, you have done a super job this week.

Year 2

Roman for going the extra mile and bringing in lots of facts about his character for World Book Day. He is such an inclusive, kind and caring member of our class.

Year 3

Poppy for her fantastic attitude to learning, particularly in her design and technology instruction writing. Super effort.

Year 4

Scarlett for showing growth and determination and maturity in art this week. Well done.

Year 5

Ariana for her positive attitude to learning and increased self-confidence.

Year 6

Bethany for working hard to produce a brilliantly written paragraph which builds atmosphere and emotion.

COVID

There are increased cases of Covid in the community. If your child does test positive they should remain off school for 3 days (starting after the day of the test) and only return when they feel well enough.

Mobile Phones and Technology

Children should not bring mobile phones into school along with smart watches that connect to phones or take photographs. We do allow children in Year 5 and Year 6, who have permission to walk home, to have a phone for safety reasons. However, they must be handed in to a member of staff at the start of the day and must not be used whilst on the school premises. If a Year 5 or Year 6 pupil is being accompanied to and from school then it is not necessary for them to have a mobile phone on their person.
