Kura Tuatahi Toko Panui
30th May 2024
Dear Parents and Friends of our School Kia Ora/Hello/Kamusta
Kia ora koutou,
We know that organising lunchboxes for the week can be a challenge. You want to make sure that the children are eating a variety of healthy food options but you also need to know that the lunch is going to be eaten. Involve your children in preparing their lunches but please don't leave them to it without checking. We are noticing a number of children making their own lunches and all that seems to be in the lunchbox is packet food that is not very fulling.
The website below from the NZ Nutirion Foundation provides ideas from the four main food groups:
- Vegetables and fruits
- Grain foods
- Milk and milk products
- Legumes, nuts meat etc
When its children's birthdays parents will often bring food in to celebrate their child's birthday. There is no obligation what so ever to do this. Lately we have seen an increase in lollies and lolly pops that are being brought to school. We would prefer that if you are bringing something to school, to share with class mates, that it is baking if you are choosing to do this.
We encourage our lunchboxes to be litter free and children are not allowed to throw out any food. If children do bring lunch wrapped or in packets this rubbish stays in the lunch box and goes home.
Just a reminder that we offer breakfast in the mornings for anyone that is hungry when they get to school. We often find children having a second breakfast which is ok with us :) At least once a week we are adding feijoas or warmed stewed apples from the orchard.

HAERENGA AKO HUI - LEARNING JOURNEY MEETINGS - PARENT/TEACHER/CHILD
School will be open on this day. Parents are encouraged to keep their children home on this day, if they can, and to bring them in for the interview. If you would like your child to stay at school for the day we will have a programme organised for them that will be run by Mrs Hancock, Mrs Waite, Mrs Eagar and the support staff. If you would like your child to come to school on this day for part of or the full day please email: office@toko.school.nz It is really important for our planning and organisation that you contact the office and let us know.
On the 20th June families will be able to see the mid year overall teacher judgements for reading, writing and mathematics along with a general comment. This information is then followed up with interviews on the 24th June.
Interviews can be booked via our school HERO APP and will be open from this afternoon. Please follow the instructions below to book interviews to meet with your child's classroom teacher. Please remember that these interviews are for the child, whanau and teacher to attend. If you wish to meet with your child's teacher separately this must occur outside of the scheduled interview times.
Caregivers associated with students will receive an email and notification advising them that bookings can now be made. Caregivers are only able to book a single interview per student per interview group (eg Class groups). Once a school booking event is closed to caregivers, bookings can be viewed but not changed. If changes are needed you need to contact the office at school. The caregiver will log into the caregiver app and navigate to School Bookings in the menu and follow the prompts. If you have any difficulties with booking your interviews please contact the school office.
Junior Play Day
On Thursday 13th June Room 1 and Room 2 will be attending the Junior Play Day at the Midhirst Hall. This is a rural clsuter event. We will be travelling to and from Midhirst Hall by bus. We will need to leave school around 9.20am. We will be back before lunchtime. This is an event where the students perform a short play in front of an audience. It is not a competition but rather a chance for students to have fun and perform in front of an audience.
CAN YOU HELP US OUT
Kawakawa Plants
We would like some kawakawa leaves to make some products. If anyone has some plants could you please get in touch with Mrs Waite.
Art Work
We are looking for a couple of people to put some school art work up on the buildings around the school now that most of the painting has been completed. The pieces are quite large so it would be a two person job. ( If you could bring your own drill as well that would be awesome :)
Lunch Orders
We are looking for a a few extra people to assist with this on Fridays. We run a roster so it would only be 1 or 2 times term. If you can help us out please contact office@toko.school.nz
BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE
Wednesday 5th June - No Power - 3.30 - 4.30
The school will have no power during this time. If you need to make contact you can call Mrs Waite on: 0273483550
Period Products
Just a reminder that we have these available at school. We have pads, tampons and liners. Please contact Annette and she can arrange it all for you. It would be great if families got in the habit of collecting these each month. This is funded by the Ministry of Education and available for all girls until they leave high school. Even if your daughters are at High School you can collect from us if that is easier. So please make use of this free resource.
Biennial Community Survey
During Term 3 we conducted our biennial community survey. We will continue to share sections of the survey each fortnight in the newsletter. The full survey is available to read on our school's website.

SPORTS UPDATE
Jones Cup
This year the annual Jones cup for Year 5 -8 will be held at Toko school on Monday 17th June with postponement days of 19th and 26th June.
This is a rural cluster event for Year 5 - 8 children. Jones Cup is a netball and rugby competition. This day is all about participation and everyone getting out and playing regardless of whether you play netball or rugby as your chosen sport. Schools that provide more than one team in each section must provide two even teams. This event is held at Toko School. It is a busy day with lots of spectators at our school. Food is sold all day in the school hall. Children in Year 1 - 4 can bring money to school on this day to buy food. We are also on the lookout for some parents from Year 1 - 4 that might be able to help out with selling food on the day. If you can assist please email or call the office.
All children are expected to take part in this day and teams are evenly split as the focus is on participation rather than competition. Information in regards to teams was sent home with the children last week.
We are still looking for coaches for the Y7-8 rugby teams as well as for the Crusaders Rippa team. If you are able to coach please let Shelley know asap.
Ideally we will run practices next week and week 7 on a Thursday from 2.15-3.00 to correspond with our whole school sports timetable. If you are able to coach but can not run practices please contact Shelley.
