CEO Warren Morgan: I do this for kids like me
The Track & Field relay race metaphor has rarely been more visually appropriate than it was the morning of Tuesday, May 9th at Garrett Morgan High School Campus.
Standing before a podium in the school’s Media Center, outgoing CMSD CEO Eric S. Gordon reached into a bag to retrieve a racing baton and then called incoming CEO Dr. Warren G. Morgan to the podium.
It was time for the symbolic exchange in leadership. Mr. Gordon first referenced the relay exchange in his State of the Schools address in 2022. Now it was coming to fruition at a press conference attended by Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, CMSD Board Chair Anne Bingham and Vice Chair Robert Heard Sr., along with other City of Cleveland and CMSD executives.
CEO Gordon handed the baton to Dr. Morgan and then the two leaders warmly embraced as the room erupted into applause. It was a simple gesture but meaningful. CMSD’s new leader had been publicly revealed.
Students serenade CEO Gordon at Rock Your World with STEAM
The customary tradition at Rock Your World with STEAM Festival is for a performance on the main stage at high noon.
The Cleveland School of the Arts Choir and Orchestra did perform but they surprised Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon by singing in his honor. They performed “To Sir, With Love.“
Mr. Gordon was clearly moved by the rendition. He remained on the stage, holding back tears, as they performed.
At the end of the performance, Kimberly Brown, All-City Arts director, asked the crowd to continue with their applause.
“We are so honored to have had the pleasure of educating and learning under the leadership of Mr. Gordon,” said Ms. Brown.
The All-City Arts dancers also performed for Mr. Gordon. During the 24th Rock Your World with STEAM Festival, students from more than 80 CMSD schools showcased their talents in science, technology, engineering, arts and music. Approximately 4,000 people attended this year's festival.
Tremont Montessori students clean up Edgewater Beach (Video)
Tremont Montessori School students were on a mission when they went to Edgewater Beach the day before this past Earth Day, in search of trash. And they found it. Lots of it.
“We found a grill,” said Stephanie, a Tremont Montessori eighth grader. “I don’t know how a grill ended up on the beach.”
During the hour-long clean-up, students found a towel, shoes, empty bottles and more.
This event is a part of the Tremont Cares Campaign.
“We wanted to do something that improves our community, our school community and Cleveland,” said Tina Kovach, a Tremont Montessori teacher.

John Marshall students walkout in protest of gun violence (Video)
Students filed out of class on the last Monday in April and walked around the John Marshall High School campus to protest gun violence.
They chanted “End Gun Violence” and held signs emblazoned with anti-gun violence messages.
Students from Civics 2.0, a program where students don’t just learn about civics but live it by taking action and having a voice, organized this walkout and created a safe space for protestors to share how gun violence has changed their lives.
“Twelve CMSD students have died due to gun violence this school year,” said Mustafa, from Civics 2.0
Makayla Barlow, a Campus International graduate, shared how she almost died while driving to her job.
"I was caught in the middle of crossfire,” she said. “I was rushed to University Hospitals and stayed there for two months.” She now lives with life-altering injuries that will remain for the rest of her life.
CEO Gordon received honorary Dazzle Award (Video)
Eric Gordon, Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO, received the highest honor a Northeast Ohio high school actor can receive, and he didn’t have to sing a note or memorize a line.
Daniel Hahn, Vice President of Education at Playhouse Square, called Gordon to the stage to receive an honorary Dazzle Award before the last performance of this year’s All-City Musical, “In the Heights.”
