Robins K-8
January 2025 Newsletter
A Message from the Principal
Welcome to 2025! I hope that you and your family enjoyed your time together in this season of special celebrations and traditions. We are happy to see our students back safe and sound and ready to engage in the learning for the 2025 year!
We are asking that you continue to monitor the health of your child and if your child is feeling just a “little sick”, the best action is to keep them home to ensure they are healthy. Please call the school office or nurse office to update us on your child’s health status. IT takes ALL of us to keep us all safe and healthy!
We will be holding school wide assemblies for our students the first week back from winter break and the focus is our PBIS expectations of being safe, responsible and respectful as well as reminding students of our no tolerance for bullying. We also will hold special learning sessions for our middle school students that has been coordinated by our school counselor, Ms. Walters as we work to ensure the health and wellness of our students.
Our elementary track season is here! We have had a great elementary basketball season as well! Our coach, Mrs. Harper, will have practice for grades 3rd, 4th, 5th on January 21st and 23rd from 2:00-2:45p.m. These practices will be considered as “tryouts” . We are able to fill a team with up to 30 students. Physicals and appropriate paperwork are needed for participation. Participation fee will not be collected until tryouts have concluded.
Parents/guardians, please join us on January 22nd for a parent workshop from 4pm-5:15 pm. We will have 5 workshops available and you’ll be able to select 3 that you’d like to attend. Please see flyer in this newsletter for the registration link.
There is no school is observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday on January 20th . Here is my favorite Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.”
On January 29th, there is no school for students, as it will be our Professional Learning Day for all staff. Please continue to keep your families safe and healthy! 😊
Tax CREDIT Season!
Good day all,
Please consider a tax contribution to Robins K-8.
Along with the holidays comes tax credit season and many of you may feel you still need to make a tax credit contribution by December 31st. Arizona Law allows Public School Tax Credits donations made during 2024, or donations made from January 1, 2025, through April 15, 2025, to be claimed on the 2024 Arizona Income Tax return. If you have additional questions with regards to claiming of tax credits, it is best for you to consult with your tax professional or reference this link to the Arizona Department of Revenue https://azdor.gov/tax-credits.
Robins K-8 utilizes our tax credit funds which is governed by our school site council in the following ways:
- After School enrichment programs for students ( Spirit Team, Gardening Club, Folklorico Dance Team, Guitar, etc.)
- Elementary Sports teams (Track, Basketball)
- School improvements to grounds/facilities
- Specialized school supplies
These are just some of the ways in which YOUR Tax Credit donation/contribution supports our school community. If you can't decide which area to donate to, simply select UNDESIGNATED and your donation will go where it is most needed. Thank you for considering our school during this tax credit season! CLICK on the link below to the TUSD tax credit website.
Sincerely,
Robins K-8 School Site Council

The start of a new year brings new goals and new beginnings! I hope all students are returning to school with a clear mind and determination to push themselves to reach their academic goals!

Hello Roadrunner families,
Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade students who were selected for membership in Robins K-8 chapter of National Junior Honor Society. Congratulations students on your amazing academic accomplishments. The induction ceremony will be held in April. New NJHS candidates should begin thinking of possible places to complete their 20 hours of community service.
Small groups are in full swing – we will reconvene after the Winter break. If your child has been participating in a small group, please check in with your student about what they have been learning in group.
The entire student body completed a 4-week series on Bully Prevention. Students should be able to identify what bullying looks like, and what to do if they notice bullying or are a target themselves. Please check in with your student and ask them to review this information with you.
As we go into the new year, I encourage you to make a choice to be intentional. This doesn’t mean that an intentional life is a perfect life—but it is a purposeful life. It’s finding the courage to let go of things that no longer serve you and to pursue things that make you feel alive and well. Here are a few tips to help you to be more intentional:
· Be mindful of the media you consume
· Choose to be kind
· Do something that brings you joy
· Ask “why” before you buy
· Practice active listening
· Make time for self-reflection
· Do something you can be proud of
· Question your “have to’s”
· Prioritize rest and self-care
Robins K-8 remains committed to providing a wonderful learning environment so that our students and families thrive. We hope all of you have a safe and peaceful Winter Break.

Robins K-8 students are making great choices on campus ! After school opportunities continue to grow with the Gardening Club, Folklorico, Guitar, K-1 Soccer and other choices as well as middle school extracurriculars including Guitar Class, Folklorico and, come January 6th, Co-Ed Soccer
Roadrunners Rock coupons are given by the K-5 teachers and PBIS points in the middle school classrooms. Middle school students have the opportunity to spend these points on various items including mechanical pencils, books and lunch rewards with Principal Thomas or myself. This semester, teachers have given out over 4300 coupons for positive behaviors and acts of kindness.
Robins K-8 students are also following school and district expectations in regard to general behaviors. However, when the seasons change, behaviors often change. Add to that the stress of the holiday season, and students begin to misbehave both in class and among their peers. Showing compassion, grace and patience with your student goes a long way to making positive behavior changes. Continue to have discussions with your student(s) about their school activities, recess time, favorite class activity, etc. Positive speak leads to positive outcomes.
Continue to encourage your Robins K-8 student to Be Kind and follow the three tenets of Robins K - 8:
- Be Safe
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
Thank You for All You Do !!

Happy New Year! January is going to be an exciting time for students and families! We are gearing up for state testing, we will be hosting a career fair February 6th during the school day, and an AVID Night on February 6th from 5:00-6:30 PM. There are also parent workshops coming on January 22nd!
I wanted to take this time to let you know that the mid-year i-Ready diagnostic is coming up next week, January 13th - 18th. This diagnostic is very important for data collection and interventions for students. Please talk to your child about taking this assessment seriously, trying their very hardest, and taking their time. The assessment will be broken into many small chunks over the course of the week and will assess student growth in reading and math.
The data that is collected from this diagnostic is used in many different ways. The school uses this data to determine if students are making progress on state standards, MTSS goals, and where students need additional support. The program uses this data to formulate the student's levels in the program and chooses lessons based on the results. If students do not try on the assessment, then the interventions they receive through i-Ready will not be appropriate. The work will be too easy, boring for students, and will not work to fill the learning gaps that the child actually has!
Teachers will be sending home student reports after the diagnostic period is closed. Please review this data with your child so they see that it was important, as well as so you can see the learning gaps and areas where you can support their education. Below you will find a link to a video to help you understand your child's diagnostic report. I have also attached a document to help understand student i-Ready data. If you would like additional support understanding your child's levels, please reach out to their teacher or myself. Thank you!
Library Corner
Hello, Scholars, and Happy New Year!
So far you all have been great keeping up with the books and turning them in on time and in good condition. Notices were sent out before Winter Break so hopefully, some of you who had overdue or lost books out have found them. If not, keep looking. They’re bound to turn up.
I also want to commend you all on checking out a lot of nonfiction books, and chapter books instead of graphic novels.
Here are some book suggestions for January:
Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry
The Eraser by Anna Kang and Christopher Weyant
No Cookies for Breakfast by Davie W Drummond Sr
Those of you who haven’t turned in your reading challenge papers, there’s still time! Just bring them to the library so you can be entered to win a grand prize. I will be drawing for winners on Friday, January 10th. The pictures of the prizes should have been last month’s newsletter. If not, they are on display in the library.
Looking forward to a great 2025! See you in the library.
