From the Desk of Mrs. Rouse
Dear Families,
As we enter the month of May, we are proud of all the hard work our students and staff have put in throughout the school year. This is an exciting time as we begin wrapping up the year and preparing for upcoming end-of-year assessments.
This month, our students will be participating in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to show what theyâve learned and how much theyâve grown. Our testing schedule is as follows:
Reading SOL â Monday, May 6th
Math SOL â Monday, May 13th
Virginia Studies and Science SOL â Monday, May 20th
We encourage all students to get plenty of rest the night before each test, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Itâs also important for students to remember to take their time, read each question carefully, and do their best. We believe in our students and know they are ready to shine!
Thank you for your continued support in helping make this a successful testing season for all. Letâs finish the year strong!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Rouse

Grade Level News
Early Start: We are revisiting a unit on âHow Things Growâ in our Streamin3 curriculum. This time we will discuss all of the wonderful ways in which we have grown this year - physically, academically, socially and emotionally. We will review the skills that weâve been working on all year and demonstrate what we know. We have been practicing for our End of the Year show which we will present to our parents on the last week of school. While we are sad itâs almost over, we are excited about the new friends weâve made and the experiences weâve shared this year. We are eager to learn more and are ready for Kindergarten!
Kindergarten: This year has flown by and your child has grown both academically and socially. We still have a lot of skills to cover so please continue to complete activities on the monthly study guide, and please use the UFLI half sheets each week. Please continue to talk to your child about school and classroom rules. This is also a good time to check your child's change of clothes and adjust for the season. Thanks for your continued support. The kindergarten team truly does appreciate all you do. As always if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thanks,
The Kindergarten Team
1st Grade:
We are excited to welcome May! In Reading we will continue to work on our reading skills to answer questions about what we read. In Math we will begin to work on Time and Story Problems. In Social Studies/Science we will finish our unit on Economics and start learning about Natural resources and ways we can reduce, reuse, and recycle. Remember to keep reading nightly and go over skills that we have learned in the classroom.
2nd Grade:
For the month of May in Math, students will begin learning about shapes and symmetry. This will include both 2D and 3D shapes. In Reading students will work on reading multisyllabic words, as well as words that end in âest, er, ly, less, and ful.â In Writing students will continue to practice cursive, and also work on composing stories. In Science students will learn about plant and animal life cycles. Please continue to read nightly with your child to help them with their fluency and comprehension. Please also review any study guides that are sent home.
3rd Grade:This month, students are focusing on SOL review in both reading and math to reinforce key skills and prepare for upcoming assessments. In science, we are beginning an exciting new unit on soil and erosion, where students will explore how natural forces shape our environment. Additionally, we will be learning about natural disasters, examining how events like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes impact the Earth and our communities.
4th Grade:
Hello Families,
We cannot believe that we are in the final stretch leading up to the end of the school year. As SOLs approach, please continue to review with your student as much as possible at home utilizing the packets/ resources sent home. It is important for students to be well rested, eat breakfast and show up to school on time for the testing days. Please continue to check our weekly newsletters for more information and practice material.
In Math, Reading & Virginia Studies, we will be reviewing information from the year to best prepare students for their SOLs.
We appreciate you continuing to support your student at home!
5th Grade:
Happy May! We currently have under 30 days of school! We continue to have a LOT of work to do. SOLs begin next week with Reading on Tuesday, May 6th. Please make sure your student is resting well at night, and coming to school daily with the attitude of, âI CAN DO IT!â MIddle school continues to be right on the horizon and the expectations for daily engagement will continue to grow! Assignments continue as we are still checking for student mastery, even though the material is review! Please make sure your child is completing their daily homework assignments and using their time as wisely as possible.
We are exploring new content in Social Studies as we learn about the Civil War. We will have one more assessment before the end of this year on this topic. Please remember to reach out to your childâs teacher if you have questions or concerns. We canât help if we donât know there is an issue. Enjoy the last month of the 2024-2025 school year!
Guidance Counselor:
Itâs hard to believe that weâre almost at the end of the school year! The Student of the Month
character trait for May is Diligence - continuous effort put forth to complete a task. There is still
lots to do before the end of the school year, so I encourage all students to show diligence each
day. Your hard work will pay off! Wishing our 3rd -5th grade students who will be taking SOL
tests much success!!
Parents/Guardians, thank you for your support with helping students to make it this far. Please
