Proviso West Teacher Recognized for Excellence in Manufacturing Education
HILLSIDE, IL - April Senase, a manufacturing teacher at Proviso West High School, continues to make waves in education, earning accolades for her program’s success and the opportunities it provides students. Recently, Senase was named Teacher of the Year by the Technology Educator Association of Illinois, adding to her growing list of awards and solidifying her impact on students pursuing careers in manufacturing.
Under Senase’s guidance, Proviso West students showcased their talents at the SME Bright Minds Student Summit, where one of Proviso's team placed third among 76 teams from 25 schools across 11 states. The month-long competition in October, coinciding with Manufacturing Month, challenged students to complete in various hands-on projects and trivia games. The team impressed judges with their creative marble rollercoaster made entirely from scissors, tape, and paper, earning a cash prize for classroom supplies.
Beyond competitions, Senase prioritizes connecting her students with local businesses to secure job opportunities. In the past three years, her manufacturing apprenticeship program has successfully placed 21 apprentices, with all 16 participants from the most recent cohort finding local employment. This approach underscores her dedication to preparing students for the workforce and emphasizing the value of skilled trades.
“My biggest advice that I can give these kids, and the whole reason I came here, is to make sure they don't feel like they're less than especially if they are not going the traditional route for education,” Senase said. “They will learn the skills that will pay their bills. They will always find jobs and will come out with a great career.”
Senase’s dedication and innovative teaching methods have earned her multiple prestigious awards, including the Illinois State Board of Education Award, the Greater Chicago Land Advanced Manufacturing Partnerships Manufacturing Educator of the Year award (twice), and recognition as Teacher of the Year by both the American Association of Career and Technical Education and the Illinois Association of Technology Educators. Her achievements also combat self-doubt about her non-traditional teaching background, proving that her passion and commitment can drive student success.
Looking ahead, Senase has been nominated for the 2025 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. This prestigious honor recognizes educators who demonstrate extraordinary teaching skills and make a lasting impact on their students’ lives.
Proviso Township High Schools District 209 is proud of Senase’s accomplishments and wishes her continued success. Her work exemplifies the transformative power of education and the vital role of skilled trades in shaping the future.
