Important School Information
Children's Mental Health Awareness Contest
We are inviting all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to participate in our Children’s Mental Health Awareness Contest. Students can submit an original piece of artwork, poetry, or a short story that promotes mental health awareness, encourages seeking support, or shares a message of hope and resilience. Submissions can focus on one or more of the following themes:
- The importance of mental health and self-care
- Coping skills and emotional wellness
- Encouraging kindness, empathy, and support for others
- Breaking the stigma around mental health challenges
All entries must be the student’s own original work. Winning submissions will be recognized and shared with our school community to help promote awareness.

General Smallwood Middle School is a PBIS Rewards School.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide framework that aims to create a safe and effective learning environment for students:
Goal
PBIS aims to improve student outcomes in social, emotional, behavioral, and academic areas. It also aims to improve the school climate and teacher health and wellbeing.
Approach
PBIS is a preventative, research-based framework that uses a tiered system to support students. It involves:
- Establishing positive expectations and behaviors
- Teaching and encouraging expected behaviors
- Discouraging inappropriate behaviors
- Using data to guide decision-making
- Establishing positive expectations and behaviors
How does my student earn PBIS Points?
Students at General Smallwood Middle School can earn PBIS points based on our TERK Principals. They are TEAMWORK, EFFORT, RESPECT, and KNOWLEDGE. Points are given by teachers and administrators in the building throughout the school day. Points are stored in student accounts and can be spent at our School Store for items such as chips, cookies, candy, juice, and water.
