CMS Toppers: News From the Middle!
10.20.24
Caroff's Corner
Hello CMS Topper Families,
Hot cider, orange pumpkins, pumpkins with bumps, gourds, and kettle corn - what is your preference? All or just some (or more not listed)? It's fall and what a stunning weekend it was! Below is some information to start your week:
- Want to know more about the mood or tone of a story/text? Ask your sixth grader and they can tell you.
- How about how to tackle a word problem - your fourth grader can likely tell you.
- And if you need some help with hitting the birdie over the net in some badminton? Ask those who had P.E. class this past week.
You will see some pictures below from one of our great spirit days! Will you be the "I" in KIND, too?
Finally, please read the message below regarding grade level meetings that will occur this Friday, October 25th.
Keep smiling, especially if you're a Topper!
Craig Caroff
Important Annoucement
This Friday, October 25th, our admin and counseling teams will have grade level meetings with students. These meetings are a result of a number of cases of racist comments and additional cruel acts in the past month. While Ms. Paroubek and I have addressed each situation individually, we are noticing an undesirable pattern of behaviors that do not follow our Student Code of Conduct.
It will be our goal to not only empower others to stand up for those who are the target of inappropriate language or acts, but also to talk with students about how to demonstrate respect and encourage kindness, resulting in being CARING, MINDFUL and SOLUTION-FOCUSED.
Thank you for encouraging your child to follow our school wide expectations and make positive choices making this a school for ALL students.
Be the "I" in KIND!
As part of our Bullying Prevention month celebrations, all CMS students had the opportunity on Thursday, October 17th, to participate in the "Be the I in Kind" campaign, put on by the 7th grade Sources of Strength leaders. Students stood with their positive friends and on their own, pledging to spread the strength of kindness at CMS and in the community. Each class also participated in Unity Day by wearing orange on Wednesday to symbolize uniting against bullying. Students in all grades levels participated in the Sources of Strength "Positive Friends" lessons in their FLEX groups, along with lessons and conversations about how to end bullying and act with respect and kindness. The 7th grade Media Production students took on the photo project and have plans to use these uplifting pictures in an upcoming project to be displayed and shared during parent-teacher conferences this fall.

Upcoming CO-GAT Testing for Fourth Grade Toppers
Parents of 4th grade students,
The State of Ohio requires school districts to offer whole-grade testing to all students twice during their education to identify gifted learners. As part of this process, all 4th-grade students will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) during the window of November 4–8, 2024. The CogAT assesses overall cognitive and reasoning abilities. Based on the results, some students may undergo additional evaluation for possible gifted identification in creative thinking. After testing, individual student CogAT results will be sent home. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this assessment, please feel free to contact Linda Elegante at linda.elegante@chardonschools.org or Megan Kinney at megan.kinney@chardonschools.org.
Sincerely,
Craig Caroff

Clinic News form Ms. Jenn
Hello Toppper families,
Thank you to all the 7th grade parents who have gotten the required vaccines.
To the 6th grade parents, when entering 7th grade the state requires a meningitis and an update tetanus to be given. I have looked at the State vaccine site and will let you know soon if I do not see dates for your child just as a reminder.
Vision testing is almost done. I have mailed letters to kids who failed. Please have your child see an eye doctor and return the form that was mailed
Hearing screening is now occurring. I will also send a letter if anyone fails so you can get your child checked at their PCP before going to an ENT doctor. Sometimes just the fact of someone having congestion can make them fail as the sounds will be muffled.
Thank you
Jennifer Trittschuh RN BSN LSN
Halloween Costume Expectations
Halloween is right around the corner and I wanted to share some expectations surrounding costumes for our school party/parade.
- Students should WEAR their costumes to school.
- Weapons of any kind are not permitted.
- Minimal make-up can be applied before school if desired. There will not be much time to apply at school. Fake blood and other scary make up is not permitted.
- Costumes should be school appropriate and need to be in line with our daily dress code.
If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact your child's teacher or the front office. Thanks so much for helping all to enjoy a great day!
Have you joined our CMS PBIS rewards yet?
During the first week of school, all families received personalized QR codes to join PBIS rewards to see your student's information as it relates to positive behavior choices in the building. If you have not joined yet, please consider doing so by scanning the code you received and signing up to receive notifications.
If you need another QR code, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher or Ms. Paroubek to access another copy.
Thanks for partnering with us on this new system!
Calling All Parents of Athletes!
Did you capture a great action photo of your child participating in CMS Football, Volleyball, Cheer or Cross Country this fall? Would you like that photograph in the yearbook? If yes, submit that photo to the yearbook staff for review. You might see it in the yearbook this spring!
