They were thrilled to discover how to record, edit, and enhance their recordings with Adobe Podcasting. As part of the project, they will be creating book reviews for the library. The teacher was impressed by the students' creativity and skills, so much so that she decided to incorporate Adobe Podcasting into a future assignment. A huge thank you to Mr. Mendoza for visiting our school and teaching the students about the many possibilities technology offers!

This past December, the David Garcia Memorial Library at Pioneer High School marked the milestone of the 3,500th library patron for the fall term. The student, Mia Casas was surprised to receive a prize basket of goodies for visiting the library. The library is a hub of activity with students and staff visiting for a variety of services such as printing, research, checking out books, book club, student learning lunches, staff learning lunches, help with chrome books and so on. We are eager to see the number of visits continue to rise as we continue supporting students and staff through library resources and services.

Mrs. Montemayor read the book The 12 Sleighs of Christmas by Sherri Duskey Rinker and provided different materials for students to design a new sleigh for Santa Claus. The students presented their design to their class and gave several reasons why their design was superior.
Chillin’ with Penguins: Habitats, Hiku, and STEM Exploration at JHS
by Monica Silva
Students at John H. Shary Elementary explored the icy world of penguins during an engaging library lesson. Pairing fiction and nonfiction books, including Hiku, they learned fun facts about penguins, their habitats, and unique characteristics.
The lesson continued with a hands-on STEM activity, where students used LEGO bricks and task cards to build penguins or cold-weather creations like igloos and sleds. This activity encouraged creativity and problem-solving while reinforcing their newfound knowledge.
With storytelling, fact-finding, and hands-on exploration, this lesson was a memorable and enriching experience for all.
Why I Became a Librarian
by Denise Cirlos
As a young child, my mother would take me to the library every two weeks. I fell in love with Nancy Drew mysteries and The Baby-Sitters Club girls. Those early visits sparked a lifelong love of reading. As I grew older and became a teacher, story time quickly became the highlight of my day! I loved sharing novels with my students and introducing them to new books and genres.
I was deeply inspired by Mrs. Ana Gonzalez, the librarian at my campus, whose fun and creative approach to promoting reading left a lasting impression on me. Watching how she encouraged students to enjoy books sparked my dream of becoming a librarian. That dream led me to pursue my Master of Library Science degree at Sam Houston State University. Now, in my 12th year as a librarian, I remain passionate about sharing my love of books and look forward to continuing this rewarding journey until I retire.
Readers' Pizza Celebration
by Josie Saladaña
In the fall semester, our Sharyland North readers participated in the fall reading challenge. Students were challenged to read 5 books over the semester. Students who met their reading goals were taken on a well-deserved celebration trip to Peter Piper Pizza. From exciting games to delicious pizza, the day was packed with joy, laughter, and great conversations about books. More than just a party, this celebration was a reminder that reading opens doors to new adventures. We are extremely proud of our Diamondback readers.

We will start with simple tasks like creating animals to get used to using Legos. THANK YOU SHARYLAND EDUCATION FOUNDATION!!!!!

Texas Youth Creators Award State Contest-Excellence is our Tradition
SHS and SA3 students submitted a combined total of 18 projects to the Texas Youth Creators Award Contest. This contest is sponsored by the Texas Library Association. Entry fees are paid with library funds.
SHS Senior John Paul Calvillo submitted projects in 4 separate divisions. He submitted projects for website design, black & white photography, color photography, and digital music composition. He has been a past state finalists in the categories of digital music composition and graphic design. He has competed since he was a student at BL Gray Junior High School.
Librarian Nicole Cruz visited 10 classrooms starting in November to share information about this state competition with students in CTE classes. "This is a great way for students to design and create engaging media projects. Last year our student video recording "Chasing State" won 1st place and the Bob Bennett Best of Show award." Students gain practical knowledge about planning, designing and revising their projects. They learn how to accept and act on constructive criticism. We have had a long tradition of success with the Texas Youth Creators Awards. It is a tradition we look forward to maintaining year after year.
Holiday Fun at John H. Shary: Trees, Tales, and Origami
by Monica Silva
At John H. Shary Elementary, students explored the iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree tradition in the library. They learned how this tradition began during the Great Depression in 1931 and discovered the detailed process of selecting and decorating the perfect Norway spruce each year in New York City.
After the lesson, students crafted their own origami Christmas trees, showcasing creativity and holiday spirit. The activity allowed them to apply fine motor skills while celebrating the season.
The week's lesson also featured a reading of The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever by Steven Kroll. This heartwarming story of teamwork and holiday joy added depth to the experience, inspiring students with its themes of community and celebration.
This engaging library lesson combined history, creativity, and storytelling, leaving students with a deeper appreciation for holiday traditions and a sense of accomplishment from their artistic creations.

Books make this season truly magical and we love to encourage students to let the holiday spirit shine through the power of reading!
Extra Yarn Read Aloud at RD Martinez Elementary
by Oneida Aleman
On a chilly January day, librarian Ms. Aleman read aloud Extra Yarn, a heartwarming story that taught the students the power of generosity and the joy that comes from sharing with others. As they listened, the students were reminded that even in tough times, giving can bring happiness and make a difference. Inspired by the story, each student created their own animal character and crafted a sweater for their pet. They worked together, exchanging tips and strategies to ensure their sweaters stayed securely on their animals. Through this collaborative project, the students not only enhanced their creativity but also learned the importance of teamwork and supporting one another. It was a fun, meaningful experience that tied together the themes of the book with their own hands-on creativity.
Learning.com Lessons

This January, the students and staff at Pioneer High School worked collaboratively to complete the digital citizenship lessons for E-rate and CIPA compliance. Every year, students must complete these lessons to comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act and the E-rate program, which provides telecommunications funding to schools and libraries. This January, PHS students completed the lessons which ranged from online safety to online bullying. These lessons remind students of the importance of digital citizenship and how to practice internet safety. This was a true team effort!

With the assistance of the Garza SPTSO, the Garza Library has been updated to provide a warm and welcoming environment for our students. During the last few days of December, a team of SPTSO parents came in, painted, assembled, and added new elements to the library. These elements include kid-friendly seating and decor throughout the library. They did an amazing job, and the kids love it!
by Jose Guerrero
“My Why” for becoming a librarian was my love for technology and information. Being a business teacher for ten years and teaching MicroSoft applications led me to look for something more and the library was a perfect fit. After reviewing the librarian curriculum, I knew this was for me. The love of reading was something that came about during the process and I was able to share that passion with my students. Looking back, making this change was the best decision I have ever made.

Why I Became a Librarian
by Thanya Montemayor
As long as I can remember, books have been my refuge, my adventure, and my solace. During my hour-long bus rides to and from school, I would lose myself in their pages. Though I unexpectedly spent twelve years as a math teacher, my true passion always lay in the world of books. For years, I admired the school librarian, Mrs. Bewley, and her work, and it was through her inspiration that I made the life-changing decision to return to school and embrace my love for literature. Now, after six fulfilling years as a librarian, I can confidently say I’ve found my true calling—and I wouldn’t want to do anything else.😊

Paws for a Cause
by Josie Saldaña
This December the North Junior High library was filled with pet food, blankets, and pet supplies for our annual Pet Supply Drive! Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful school community, we collected much-needed supplies for pets in need from around the RGV. The library decorated the front doors as a Gingerbread Animal Shelter to help draw attention this worthy cause.
It was a heartwarming sight to see our staff and students come together to support our furry friends. A huge thank you to our history teachers who helped collect donations. As a result of the pet drive, we were able to ensure our local shelters had the supplies and food to keep their dogs and cats warm and fed this winter.
