6th Grade

Our Swann sixth graders are learning about the Middle Ages in Social Studies and learning about soil and stewardship in Science. Students are getting ready for their environmental stewardship and social justice unit in ELA. In Math, they are practicing negative numbers and absolute value.

7th Grade

Our Swann seventh graders are learning about the Cold War from a global perspective in Social Studies and the human body in Science. They are getting ready for their civil rights unit in ELA and practicing angles in Math.

8th Grade

Our Swann eighth graders are learning about the Cold War from the American perspective in Social Studies and molecular chemistry in Science. They are getting ready for their social justice unit in ELA and exploring exponents and scientific notation in Math.

Swann social studies students are participating in an archeological dig! They are working with the New South Associates to investigate the early-1900s Cypress Street School that used to stand on Swann’s campus. They have uncovered the foundation, along with bricks, a bottle, part of a book, glass, building materials, and a porcelain doll arm!

Students in Ms. Thompson's STEM lab have been building and programming EV3 robots! They practiced coding them for moves and turns, lifting objects, navigating obstacles, grabbing and releasing objects, and following colors and lines. Spanish Immersion 8th graders worked with Mr. Alvarez to design radio broadcasts sharing information about a current event and selected songs. See the clip linked here for a short sample of their work: https://youtu.be/r2MIv58CeU8

We're gearing up for the Swann Middle School 100th anniversary celebration on Saturday, April 9 from 11-3. The event will include:

* Music and performances (including a Moana sneak peak plus the band and orchestra!)

* Food trucks and vendors

* Kids' games

* Free neighborhood tours led by Preservation Greensboro

* Historical exhibit focusing on school history and artifacts

* Updates on the Cypress Street School archeological dig, to be located on the Swann grounds

* One-day book fair

* Interactive art exhibit (currently seeking donations of yarn, ribbon, and fabric--drop off in the bin near the office)
