Magyar's Message April 19, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
Thank you to everyone who attended our State of the Schools Address last week. It was wonderful to share all of the great things happening in our school district. We have so much to be grateful for. Together we have accomplished a lot this year and I look forward to what the remaining months will bring.
The Power Point presentation and audio recording from the presentation are available on our district website, click here. I encourage all of you to review the material. Some key points from the event include an update regarding our Building ALegacy campaign. As mentioned in a previous Superintendent’s Message (March 22), the district entered into an agreement with ThenDesign Architecture, Ltd. (TDA) for master planning and design services for our capital improvement program. Representatives from TDA are in the process of meeting with various groups within our district giving updates on the plan.
Please save the date as we will have a Community Forum May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Learwood Middle School to present the new plan prior to the May Board meeting. Once again, thank you for your feedback and comments throughout this process. It has been helpful as we continue to plan for our future.
Having the forum at Learwood will also afford the community to come inside our schools and see first-hand the conditions our students and staff are working in. While our custodial and maintenance staff does a wonderful job maintaining our buildings, there are several mechanical and infrastructure needs that remain in all of our facilities. Please bring your friends and neighbors on May 8.
We also encourage you to review the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) Assessment – Summary (presented April 2021) which details the building assessment summaries for each building. To view, click here.
Another item presented during the State of the Schools is the possibility of combining a bond issue, operating levy and permanent improvement levy for the November ballot. The Board of Education is still considering this option. Based on feedback from the community survey, the concept, “One Ask, for the future of Avon Lake”, was heard and it is why this option will be recommended to the Board. The One Ask will cover all of the needs the district has; building issues, operating issues and our permanent improvement needs. While the numbers are being finalized, the “One Ask” recommendation will likely total less than what we asked for the Bond issue only. Votes will be taken at the May and June Board meetings so the issue can be placed on the ballot in November. We will continue to keep you updated.
Yesterday (Thursday) was opening night for the Avon Lake High School Drama Club’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” The cast, crew and directors have put in many, many hours of rehearsals leading up to this weekend. The show is AMAZING! I encourage all of you to come out for a performance this weekend. You will not be disappointed!
We had several elementary and Troy students qualify as finalists for the Young Entrepreneur Pitch Challenge supported by the Young Entrepreneur Institute. Each student who participated should take great pride in their diligent efforts in problem-solving, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Congratulations.
Our ALHS Academic Challenge Team advanced to the semifinals in the Scholastic Games radio quiz show on WEOL (AM930 and FM 100.3). The team will compete May 6 at 5 p.m. against the winner of next week’s Midview-Vermilion match-up.
The Avon Lake City Schools would like to offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Allen Family of Avon and all of the Avon Eagles. Families, hug your children a little tighter each night.
We thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar

Avon Lake Historical Society History Mystery Hunt
The Avon Lake City Schools is proud to be part of the Avon Lake Historical Society “History Mystery Hunt” scavenger hunt. The hunt features 12 different landmark buildings in and around Avon Lake that takes participants back in time through Avon Lake’s history. To participate, pick up a packet at the Avon Lake Public Library. The packet includes clues that follow a trail of 12 of Avon Lakes historic landmarks. Use the clues to find pieces of a puzzle and answers to questions about each site. Once complete, five forms will be chosen at random for a variety of exciting prizes! The hunt runs through June 15.
