Daniel Wright
Author Visit
Author Jennifer Nielsen met with Daniel Wright students last week sharing lively stories and tools of the trade during presentations, interviews with students, and a writer’s workshop. Mrs. Nielsen also met with a student book club that read her latest novel, "Lines of Courage." Mrs. Nielsen writes young adult fiction. DW students had their favorite Nielsen book signed by the author while others re-created posters of the author’s book covers.
“Jennifer Nielsen’s authentic interest in student success with writing and reading was tremendously apparent throughout the day. Student interviewers, artists, book club members, writing workshop participants, and large group listeners all responded with enthusiasm and excitement to read her next book or begin to write their own first novel. It was an incredible experience; one of the best author visits we have ever had at DW,” said Tabatha Otto, Library Media Specialist.
Please visit the school's Google Doc folder to see more pictures of the celebration.

District News
Emergency Response Drills
The safety and welfare of our students and staff is one of our highest priorities in District 103 and the thought of a hostile intruder in our schools is not a pleasant one. We have worked collaboratively with local law enforcement officials to review our safety plans and identify ways in which we can strengthen our safety procedures.
District 103 has adopted procedures for school emergencies that we, as well as our local police department, believe are effective if there is an armed intruder in one of our buildings. The procedures follow the acronym ALICE. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. Please read the district news bulletin for more about ALICE in our schools.
On Tuesday, October 25, we will work with the local police department to practice the emergency response drill in a way that is grade level appropriate. Students are permitted to ask questions during the drill so they can be better prepared in the event of an emergency. Drills will take place at the following times:
Sprague - 9:00 a.m.
Half Day - 10:15 a.m.
Daniel Wright - 11:00 a.m.
If you would like to opt out of your child participating in the Emergency Response Drills, please fill out the following Google Opt Out Form for your child’s school by noon Friday, October 14, 2022. One form per child should be filled out.

Self Driven Child
Author Ned Johnson will share his expertise with parents virtually from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, October 17, on how to talk to our children and what to say to help promote their motivation, resilience, and happiness. Please register for this virtual presentation.
With the knowledge he has gained, he has co-authored two books: "What Do You Say? How to Talk with Kids to Build Motivation, Stress Tolerance, and a Happy Home" and the national best-seller, "The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives." Ned believes that now more than ever, our kids need healthy motivation and the ability to handle stress in effective ways.
During his presentation, Ned will offer parents with concrete, accessible advice on how to talk to our children and what to say to help promote their motivation, resilience, and happiness. Studies suggest that children increasingly feel a lack of control in their lives. Ned will provide a brain based understanding of how changing our parental approach can help our kids feel more empowered, while reducing battles in the home and improving connection with our kids. Ned's goal is to provide parents with practical advice on how to help kids perform their best when it matters most.
The Vernon Area Public Library and the PTO organizations of D96, D102, and D103 are excited to welcome Ned Johnson to share his expertise with the parents of our communities.
