Community Connections
Get Set! Program – Support for Families
Catholic Charities of Oswego County offers the Get Set! program, which provides services aimed at strengthening family relationships and improving social and emotional wellness. The program focuses on teaching valuable life skills to help families thrive, including:
✔️ School readiness and improved school performance
✔️ Safety and stability at home and in the community
✔️ Age-appropriate discipline and positive parenting strategies
A Family Success Coach and Mentor can meet with caregivers, children, or the family as a whole. If children are over the age of 12, they can be the sole focus of the services. Meetings can take place at home, at the agency, or in a community setting—whatever works best for the family’s needs.
To learn more about the program:
Contact Brooke Foster at (315) 256-3038 or bfoster@ccoswego.com.
To request a referral:
Families can also reach out to Erica Freeborn, APW Jr./Sr. High School Social Worker, at (315) 625-5258 or efreeborn@apwcsd.org.
This is a wonderful opportunity to build stronger family connections and set the foundation for long-term success!
SEL Topic of the Month
Reducing Stress and Anxiety
This month’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) focus is on Reducing Stress and Anxiety—especially around test-taking and giving presentations. Learning techniques to manage stress is important because it helps improve focus, boosts confidence, and enhances overall performance. When students are able to regulate their stress levels, they are better equipped to stay calm, think clearly, and perform to the best of their ability.
Some helpful tips to reduce stress and anxiety include:
✅ Good Hygiene – Maintaining a regular routine of sleep, nutrition, and personal care helps the body and mind feel more balanced and prepared for challenges.
✅ Good Study Habits – Creating a study schedule, breaking down material into manageable sections, and using active learning techniques (like flashcards or summarizing notes) can make information easier to retain and recall during tests and presentations. It’s also helpful to simulate a test-like environment when studying by eliminating distractions—avoid listening to music or having background noise to mimic the quiet setting of an actual test.
✅ Mindfulness and Deep Breathing – Taking a few deep breaths before a test or presentation can help calm the nervous system and improve focus.
✅ Positive Self-Talk – Replacing negative thoughts with encouraging ones can help shift your mindset and reduce performance anxiety.
By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you’ll be better prepared to face tests and presentations with confidence and a sense of control.
Thank you for your support in helping our students develop strong emotional and academic skills.
