Diwali
Diwali is a “festival of lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. The name comes from Sanksrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” On the night of Diwali, celebrants light dozens of candles and clay lamps (called diyas), placing them throughout their homes and in the streets to light up the dark night. Diwali is primarily celebrated by followers of the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths. Though technically religious, it's also become a cultural event in North America celebrated with sweets and special foods. This year Diwali Day will be celebrated on Friday, November 1, 2024.
Learn more about Diwali by watching a video from National Geographic and by checking out some picture books shared by PBS!
Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. This month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Throughout the year, and especially during November, we celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and contributions of Indigenous people.

BHS Student Selected for NYSSMA Songwriters Showcase
Brighton High School senior Frances Lovett was selected to participate in the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) Songwriters Showcase at the All-State Winter Conference. She will perform at a concert at the Rochester Convention Center on Dec. 5.
Lovett and her band teacher, Dr. Sarah Fischer-Croneis, submitted her original song, “I Tried,” in the spring. A panel of judges evaluated the submissions and accepted just 10 students from across the state to feature in the concert. She will also get the opportunity to work with songwriting professionals in a workshop.
The senior plays bassoon in the BHS Wind Ensemble and sings in the Mixed Concert Choir. Lovett recorded an album last spring and has been performing around Rochester. You can listen to her song on all the major streaming platforms.
