PBL Showcase This Friday, January 10th
Our 2nd-8th graders are excited to showcase their water unit projects during our schoolwide "Protecting the Environment Information Campaign" PBL showcase this Friday, January 10th from 2-3 pm. All kindergarten through 8th graders will have the opportunity to see the projects, and all families are invited and encouraged to visit as well.
Parking is available on the surrounding streets. Please enter through the front lobby facing Broadway when you arrive. See you Friday!
Second Semester Club Registration
Registration for winter clubs will open tomorrow through your Infinite Campus Parent Portal School Store and will close on Wednesday, January 15th!
Spots are limited, so please be ready to sign up as soon as possible! A limited number of scholarships will also be available to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Please note that a student must have both a registration through the Parent Portal AND a submitted scholarship form to have a confirmed scholarship spot in a club, as space allows.
More details will be sent when registration opens, so keep an eye on your email tomorrow!
Winter Spirit Wear Available
Our school merch store has some long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, zipped hoodies, and beanies in stock! Order online at https://cwckansascity.square.site, and it will be sent home with your student. Please reach out to Mr. Albarelli with any questions!
MOCSA Presentations
Beginning the week of January 13th, MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault) will be visiting CWCKC to present age appropriate programming to help keep children and youth safe from sexual abuse and harassment. Check your child's backpack for a letter with the specific date for your child's class.
Kindergarten through 4th grade will participate in Project Aware, which is an educational program that teaches children about different ways to keep their body safe. Students learn the differences between good, bad and confusing touches. Children are taught three safety rules to use if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable: SAY NO, GET AWAY, and TELL SOMEONE. Children are encouraged to identify trusted adults they can talk with. An age appropriate video is shown in class and materials are provided for each child to take home.
5th grade through 8th grade will learn about sexual harassment. They will learn the four types of sexual harassment (physical, verbal, non-verbal, written) and will identify examples in each category. They will discuss consequence of sexual harassment as well as how it might make someone feel if they are harassed. They will also learn strategies to deal with sexual harassment if it happens to them.
If you have any questions concerning either of these programs, you can contact the MOCSA Coordinator of Education and Outreach at 816-285-1354 or projectaware@mosca.org.
If you DO NOT want your child to attend their class's presentation, please contact Johanna Chambers, Director of Student Support at 816-537-1634 or johanna.chambers@cwckansascity.org.
Inclement Weather Policy
As stated in the Family Handbook, our inclement weather policy is:
When deciding to close school for inclement weather, CWC Kansas City will generally follow the lead of the Kansas City Public School District. However, CWC Kansas City reserves the right to still make our own decision.
When KCPS announces their decision, CWC Kansas City will announce and communicate our
decision as well. We will post on our website and Facebook page, report to ABC-CBS-NBC, and send email/texts to our staff and parents. We will use the most updated contact list, please ensure the school always has the correct email/phone number(s) on file.
Generally speaking, we will wait for the decision from KCPS before making a decision for CWC.
● If KCPS is closed and we follow suit, we will communicate as soon as we are aware of their
decision and confirm our own.
● If KCPS is closed and we will still stay open, we will communicate as soon as we are aware of their decision and confirm our own.
● If KCPS is on a delayed start schedule, we will communicate our open/close status as soon as we are aware of their decision and confirm our own.
● If KCPS is either open, or is very late to announce a closure, we may still decide to close
regardless, and we will communicate that decision as soon as we have made it.
These decisions are generally made outside of normal school hours; therefore, please do not call, email, or message the school or specific employees and expect an immediate response – we will communicate a decision utilizing all of the above methods as soon as the decision is made.
