Probability Vocabulary
1st Semester
Here you will find all the vocabulary words that you will need to know for this unit. These can and will show up on the final exam.
Combination
An ordered arrangement where order does not matter
Complement
The set of all outcomes in the sample space that are not outcomes in the event. This is the "not" of probability
Conditional Probability
The probability of one event occurring assuming that the other event has already occurred
Dependent Event
The probability of occurrence of an event when it has an effect on the probability of the other event
Empirical Probability
Probability based on the event and how often something occurred in the event
Event
Any subset of a sample space
Expected Value
A mathematical was to use probabilities to determine what to expect in various situations over a period of time
Experiment
Any occurrence for which the outcome is uncertain
Factorial
The product of that integer shown and all the integers below it
Fundamental Counting Principle
Independent Event
Law of Large Numbers
As an experiment is repeated more and more times, the empirical probability of an event tends to get closer to the theoretical probability of that event
Mutually Exclusive
Events that are impossible to occur simultaneously. This is the "or" of probability
Odds
The probability that the event will occur divided by the probability that the event will not occur
Odds in Favor
The probability of an event occurring divided by its complement
Odds Not in Favor
The probability of an events complement divided by the probability of the event occurring
Permutation
An ordered arrangement where order does matter
Permutation Formula
Combination Formula
Theoretical Probability
Probability based in theory given a specific situation
Tree Diagram
A tool used to calculate the number of outcomes in an event
