Sherwood ES Summer Update
August 19, 2024
Sherwood Open House Friday from 10am-12pm
We will have our Open House on Friday, August 23. The Open House will be for Kindergarten through Grade 5 from 10 am-12 pm. Discrete programs will also hold their Open House at the same time.
To assist with parking, families are asked to stagger visits by student last name. However, any family may come at any time as needed.
Last names A-L are scheduled for 10 am-11 am, and
Last names M-Z are scheduled for 11 am-12 pm.
Parents are encouraged to come with kids to visit the school and classroom to drop off any classroom supplies and say hello. However, this is meant to be a short “meet and greet”, there will not be any staff presentations. Administration and counseling will be available to answer any questions.
Parking
Parents may park in the main parking lot, the ride side of the bus lane, or across the street at the Sharp Street church parking lot. Please do not park on the grass or the veterinary office across the street.
Back to School Night Save the Dates
Kindergarten Back to School Night - evening of Thursday, August 22 from 6:00pm-7:15pm
Grades 1-5 and PEP Back to School Night - evening of Thursday, September 12 from 6:00pm-7:30pm
The audience for back to school night is parents and caregivers. We will have an opportunity for all families and students to visit Sherwood on our open house date of Friday, August 23rd from 10am-noon.

MCPS Back to School Fair at Westfield Wheaton Mall
BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR
at WESTFIELD WHEATON
SATURDAY, AUG. 24, 2024
10 A.M. – 1 P.M.
All MCPS students and their families are invited to kick off the new school year at the Back-to-School Fair. The event is a wonderful opportunity for families to learn about the school system and county programs and services, while enjoying family-friendly activities, entertainment, a free immunization clinic and more.
Location: Westfield Wheaton is located at 11160 Veirs Mill Road, Wheaton.
Free Transportation Available: MCPS will offer free, round-trip shuttle buses between the fair and the following MCPS high schools:
- Gaithersburg High School, 101 Education Blvd., Gaithersburg
- John F. Kennedy High School, 1901 Randolph Road, Silver Spring
- Montgomery Blair High School, 51 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring
- Paint Branch High School, 14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville
- Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive, Rockville
- Wheaton High School, 12401 Dalewood Drive, Silver Spring
The first shuttle will depart from high schools at 9 a.m. and the last shuttle will leave Westfield Wheaton at 2 p.m.

Volunteers Needed!!

Playground Playdate
We will be hosting our annual playground playdate on August 24th from 10-12 on the playground behind the school. 10-11 is primarily for our K and new students and 11-12 is for the entire school. Popsicles and PTA Membership information will be available.
Parent Run Facebook Groups
The PTA website links to the parent run facebook groups. These groups host playdates and post about grade specific gatherings. When teacher assignments are announced, parents will sometimes post so students can see if their friends will be in class with them. Throughout the year events are posted to help you stay up to date. If you are on facebook, please consider joining the group for your child(rens) specific grade level.
First PTA General Body Meeting
Our first PTA General Body Meeting of the year will be on Tuesday, October 1st, 2024. Light Refreshments will be served. More details to come.

School supply lists by grade are linked below. Please note that the lists are divided into personal classroom supplies, shared classroom supplies, and frequent donations. Families will be able to bring materials to our open house dates before school begins.
Any student who does not have materials will be provided materials from the school.

Cafeteria Updates and Purchasing School Meals
Overview
Free Meals are No Longer Available for ALL Students, due to the end of Federal USDA waivers.
Meal Prices for School Year 2024-2025 are:
Breakfast: Regular Price: $1.30
Lunch: Regular Price: $2.55
MySchoolBucks is an optional service for parents to view recent purchases and make prepayments to your child’s cafeteria account for breakfast, lunch and a la carte meals via the Internet with a credit/debit card. This service is offered as a convenience for interested families. By creating a secure online account, parents can manage their child’s account.

Free and Reduced Meals
Students may qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on household size and income.
They may also qualify if they are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), or Medicaid benefits.
Families may apply for meal benefits by completing an Application for Free and Reduced-price Meals for the current school year. Questions? Please call 240-740-7400.

Arrival and Carpool Safety
Some general reminders to help everything work safely and efficiently.
- Please pull all the way up to the end of the carpool lane to allow as many cars as possible to pick up or drop off at once.
- When entering the driveway, please be patient and take turns with cars turning from the left and the right. Please be extra careful turning left onto route 108 when exiting the parking lot.
- When crossing the crosswalk, please wait for the hand signals from staff that the carpool lane is safe to cross.
- Please do not enter the bus loop lane during arrival or dismissal.
- During the day, please do not park in the bus loop from 11:30am-12:30pm due to bus pickups.
- Please do not block any of the lanes.
- After 9:25, students need to be signed in at the main office by a parent or caregiver.

Student Support Positions Available
Sherwood Elementary School is almost fully staffed to start the school year. We are still looking to fill several student support positions. These positions are working with individual students in grades 1-4 throughout the school day. Please share with the larger community if you know of anyone who might be looking for a position that loves working work kids in a busy school setting.
