SSEA Donates to the Brown Bagger School Food Program
The Brown Bagger School Food Program in Sullivan County, Indiana, is a community-driven initiative dedicated to combating child hunger by providing nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for children to take home during weekends and school vacations, times when other resources may not be available.
Program Highlights:
-
Nutritional Support: Each "Brown Bagger Pack" contains a variety of healthy, nonperishable food items that are low in sodium, sugar, saturated fats, and trans fats. Examples include fruit cups, beanie weenies, beef stew, chicken and dumplings, peanut butter crackers, cereal, 100% juice boxes, granola bars, and fruit snacks.
-
Service Area Expansion: Originally focused on Sullivan County, the program has extended its reach to also serve Greene and Clay counties in Indiana, addressing food insecurity across multiple communities.
-
Community Engagement: The program maintains an active presence on Facebook, fostering community involvement and support.
The recent financial contributions from the SSEA's ISTA Opportunity Grant and the teachers' union donation totaling $750 will enhance the program's ability to provide for more children in need, ensuring they have access to nutritious food outside of school hours.
For more information or to get involved, visit the Brown Bagger School Food Program's website or their Facebook group.
Beta Leadership Summit
These SHS Sr. Betas attended the Beta Leadership Summit in Gatlinburg, TN, on March 6 and 7. They attended leadership training workshops, participated in team challenges, and explored Gatlinburg sites, shops, and restaurants. They are national qualifiers in Lead Outside the Box and Collaboration Connection team challenges and will be able to compete in these challenges at the national convention in Orlando in June.
This Summit was reported to be the largest one for Beta this year. There were approximately 1200 elementary, junior, and senior Betas in Gatlinburg. We were also one of 7 Indiana Beta clubs in attendance at the summit.
SMS Students Serve as Indiana State House Pages
Emery Whitkanack and Olivia Eslinger got a behind the scenes look at government Monday, March 10th, empowering them to become informed and active citizens!
Serving as a Statehouse Page is a unique opportunity for students to engage with the legislative process and experience government in action. Many state legislatures, including Indiana's General Assembly, offer this program to allow students to spend a day at the State Capitol, learning about state government while assisting legislators and staff.
What Does a Page Do?
Students selected as pages spend the day at the Indiana Statehouse, where they:
- Observe the Legislative Process – Pages sit in on House or Senate sessions, watching as bills are debated and laws are made.
- Tour the Statehouse – They explore the historic building, visiting the chambers, committee rooms, and offices of legislators.
- Meet Their Legislators – Pages often meet and interact with their district’s representative or senator, learning about their roles and responsibilities.
- Assist with Legislative Duties – Pages may deliver messages, distribute materials, run errands, and help with administrative tasks to support lawmakers.
- Engage in Civic Learning – They learn firsthand about the importance of government, democracy, and civic responsibility.
Who Can Serve as a Page?
- Typically open to middle school and high school students (grades 6-12).
- Students must apply in advance, often through their local state representative or senator.
- No political affiliation is required—just an interest in government and civic engagement.
Benefits of Being a Page
- Hands-On Learning Experience – Provides a real-world perspective on how laws are made.
- Networking Opportunities – Students interact with lawmakers, staff, and other engaged students.
- Enhances College & Scholarship Applications – Demonstrates leadership, civic involvement, and an interest in government.
- Encourages Future Civic Engagement – Inspires students to become more involved in politics, leadership roles, or even pursue a career in public service.
How to Apply
Students interested in serving as a page can typically apply through the Indiana General Assembly website or by contacting their state legislator’s office.
