Check and Connect Cohort 2
Check & Connect is an intervention used with K-12 students who show warning signs of disengagement with school and are at risk of dropping out. At the core of Check & Connect is a trusting relationship between the student and a caring, trained mentor who both advocates for and challenges the student to keep education salient. Students are referred to Check & Connect when they show warning signs of disengaging from school, such as poor attendance, behavioral issues, and/or low grades.
SST6 is preparing for a second cohort of LEA teams to participate in a two-day team training to learn the basics of Check & Connect and begin planning for implementation.

DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT
Every year, SSTs are asked to work with a district team in their region to improve communication for a specific student. The Communication Competency Project with University of Cincinnati Systems Development & Improvement Center and coaching provided by State Support Team 6 has been working with a dynamic team from Bellefontaine City Schools. The team consists of Intervention Specialist: Hayley Nease, Speech Language Pathologist: Kacie Ross and Special Education Director: Pat Martz. The team has attended two full day trainings to learn about the communication process and device assessment. Between training dates the team has met with SST6 every month to discuss student success and to design appropriate next steps. The student and team have been working very hard. The student’s communication has grown leaps and bounds since the beginning of the school year.
REGION SPOTLIGHT
Preschool Autism Series: Comprehensive Program Planning Institute
SST6 partnered with OCALI this past school year to offer the Preschool Autism Series: Comprehensive Program Planning Institute, which included ten teams. The preschool programs/districts that participated include Shawnee/Allen County ESC, Bellefontaine City Schools, Graham Local Schools, Shelby County Board of DD, St. Marys/Auglaize County ESC, Triad Local Schools, and Wapakoneta City Schools,
During three in-person training days and two onsite coaching opportunities, teams have learned to use a process-planning framework for designing positive behavior interventions. The framework provided participants with tools to assess a student's specific needs by examining the underlying characteristics, strengths and special interests as well as environmental factors to design individualized interventions that are evidence-based and systematically implemented throughout the day. The process encourages parents and professionals to work collaboratively to develop positive support to meet the needs of students across all settings. On the last day, participants created and shared a 10-15 minute presentation on the plan they developed and implemented, along with the positive outcomes achieved. These were spectacular and highly engaging! Thanks to all participants for their focus and dedication!
Thanks also to Denise Sawan Caruso and Megan Trowbridge from OCALI for helping provide such a great series!
