Note from Mrs. Fragomeni
Families,
We completed our first full week back from our Thanksgiving break. My hope is that your family was able to unwind and spend quality time together. For those who may not know, my wife and I have a 2 year old son. So we are learning how to keep an active toddler busy in the winter months! We enjoyed the Thanksgiving parade, games with family/friends, quality time with his grandparents, and many library visits! It was such a special few days, however, I was excited to welcome our Blue Jays back to Burton.
This week we were met with winter weather conditions. Here are a few tips to help your Blue Jay:
- Practice having your child get dressed independently in their winter gear.
- Label everything! Coats, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, boots, etc. (even writing your child's initials is helpful in returning their lost items).
- A recycled tote bag is an easy winter organization for snow pants, hats, and gloves. It simply hangs on the outside of your child's locker.
- When in doubt, bring it! Physical activity is essential for our students to learn. Therefore, students will always have outside recess unless conditions are too cold or rainy. Proper winter attire may include winter coats, hats, gloves, and snow pants.
Winter Temperatures:
When the temperature "feels like" is 9 degrees or below, we will have indoor line-up and indoor recess. In the morning (beginning at 7:50am), our 5th grade safeties will open the doors and allow students to line-up inside the building. Students will then walk and line-up outside their classroom.
Student Drop Off:
- Please utilize the rec center drop off area to ensure students are exiting vehicles safely.
- Please pull forward before dropping off your child.
- All students should exit and walk on the sidewalk for student safety.
- Please do not drop off students near the Nadine doors. This area is utilized for families in the ASD program.
Merry Math Night - New PTA Event
Burton’s Merry Market Math Night is coming December 12!
The PTA is excited to bring a new event to Burton, The Merry Market Math Night! This fun-filled evening combines math skills, creativity, and a touch of holiday cheer.
When: Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 5:00 pm-6:45 pm
Where: Burton Elementary
Here is what to expect:
Part 1: Math Games (5:00–6:00 pm)
Students will play various engaging math games to earn "Burton Bucks." The more games your child plays, the more they can earn to use at the market!
Part 2: The Merry Market (6:00 pm-6:45 pm)
The Merry Market opens at 6:00 pm. Students can spend their Burton Bucks on items made by their classmates. They can also sign up to host their own student stand where they "sell" something they've created. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talents, creativity, and student entrepreneurship!
Some ideas for student stand items include:
- Origami
- Friendship bracelets
- Bookmarks
- Artwork
- Holiday crafts
How to Sign Up for a Stand?
If your child wants to participate as a seller, please the form below.
Space is limited to 30 stands, so we encourage students to work with a partner to share a stand and create items together. Students are responsible for setting up and running their own stand (with as minimal parent support as possible). Stand set-up is from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm on December 12, 2024. Families can bring their creations and minimally assist with set-up.
The Merry Math Night is a free event, and we hope all families can attend!

Burton Spirit Wear Shop
The spirit wear shop features Burton's updated logo. The crest, much like the classic football clubs, signifies the strength and lineage of our community. The bricks proudly represent our school building, the welcoming front sign, and the iconic clock tower—a true testament to our heritage. And, of course, our Blue Jay has been given a modern look, embodying the spirit of growth and innovation that defines us.
Let's show off our Burton pride!

Burton Bond Update
Fencing Near Burton Field
Please note, the map above is not exact or to scale. Just to give an idea of the ongoing construction.
Bond Update:
This is the first phase of our construction work. As a reminder, here is the plan for this construction season:
Burton’s new multi-purpose/cafeteria addition will be attached to the building at the northeast corner of the playground by the gym. It will house a new lunchroom, a new kitchen, storage rooms, restrooms and will be a wonderful space for collaboration.
Half of Burton’s playground (east side) and parking lot will be fenced off by mid-October to prepare for construction. The playground doors will remain open with the construction fence just to the east.
Construction fencing will also go up in the southeast section of the field inside the track, to prepare for a new, smaller playground area. The park entrance will still be accessible.
Due to the location of the addition, some Burton playground equipment (swings, monkey bars, tubes, shade sails) will move to inside the track permanently.
The street-side parking on Nadine plus the sidewalk will remain open through November/December.
Once the new playground area is completed in the field, the Nadine parking lot and sidewalk adjacent to the parking lot will be closed to the public through the end of August 2025. At that time, Burton families and students will use a gate near the field for drop off and pick up.
As construction dates get solidified, we will share them with the Burton and Huntington Woods community so everyone is prepared for the full construction season.
December Lunch Menu
Tuesdays = Dominos Pizza
On Tuesdays, Domino's Pizza will be among the five food choices students can select. All students ordering pizza will receive ONE free slice and a vegetable, fruit, and milk. If your child would like an additional slice of pizza (2 slices total), they must preorder it in the morning and have at least $2.00 in their student account. On Tuesday mornings, classroom teachers will ask students if they would like one slice or two. This is helpful so the lunch team is accurate on the total pizza slices to decrease food waste.
To add funds to your child's account, please access the Parent Portal.
