You can use these access control systems to grant access to some, while preventing unauthorized personnel from entering.

How these access control systems work

These access control systems have a number of components. These include:

· The controller

With the controller, you have a central control panel; this may be a physical device, or it may be software that you run on one of your servers. With the controller, you can change access rules, add or delete accounts, and review exit and entry reports. Smaller systems run from a scanner or keypad, and you can program them with a laptop. You can buy these less expensive access control systems, depending on your budget. However, you may want to invest in a slightly more expensive system if you want more flexibility.

· Automatic locks

· Access device

The access device can include any number of different technologies and input systems, such as card readers, biometric scanners, or keypads. However users actually identify themselves to the system, though, the access device is the means by which they do so.

Which of the access devices should you choose?

The most popular kind of device for access is the proximity access card, used with proximity access control systems. This card contains a small radio transponder that tells the system who the holder of the card is. It's called a proximity card because you just have to hold it near a reader in order to have it work. They have distinct advantages over other types of access devices, because they are easy for users to carry, are very inexpensive and last a long time, and can have other identifying features added to them, like the user's picture.

You also don't actually have to give users a proximity access "card." Similar technology can be put into key fob-type devices, which may be easier for some users to carry.

Magnetic card door lock systems use magnetic cards for users to gain access. These have magnetic strips similar to credit cards, and must be "swiped" similar to credit cards in order for users to gain access. They have about the same advantages as proximity cards do, but one of the disadvantages is that these door lock systems and other magnetic cards' access uses can be hard on the cards, since they have to be swiped. They therefore wear out more quickly than proximity cards do, and have to be replaced more often. This may make them more expensive than proximity cards over the long run.
