Y5s Learn through Play
The Young 5s at Mark Twain Elementary experience engagement, build social skills, and enhance creativity through our daily playtime in the afternoon. Through choice and freedom, our Young 5 students receive a rich learning experience while making discoveries in a way that feels like fun rather than work. They will use these skills as they progress to become kindergarteners next year.
Someone once said, “Children learn as they play, but most importantly in play, children learn how to learn.”

Second Step Social & Emotional Learning
As you know, in September we kicked of the Second Step Curriculum in all K-8 classes to further strengthen our social and emotional learning. Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with a variety of social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Ike to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.
This week, each grade-level will begin a new unit. Please view the grade-level home links below to learn more about what your child is learning and how to support them at home during the second unit of Second Step.

4th Grade Learns About the Underground Railroad
As part of our social studies unit, fourth graders at Twain have been learning about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. As an extension to our lessons, students worked together with a partner to complete a webquest about Harriet Tubman. Once they completed the activity using their iPads, they could choose to either write about what they had learned about Harriet Tubman or use their creativity to make a poster about her. The students really enjoyed this activity

Change in Learning Modes
At this time, families are able to request to change the learning mode for their student(s) for the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year. Students who are currently attending school in-person in can switch to virtual, and students who are enrolled in virtual can switch to in-person. If you do not wish to switch your child’s learning mode, no action is necessary.
Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Submitting the form linked in this email does not guarantee a request will be granted. Requests will be reviewed by building and district leadership and the parent/guardian will be notified. If approved, the change will be effective for the second semester (January 6, 2025 - June 6, 2025).
Please carefully consider this semester-long commitment before submitting this application, as requests to change during the second semester will not be granted. However, the District may change your child’s learning mode if appropriate academic progress is not met throughout the semester.
If you are interested in changing your child’s learning mode for the second semester, please fill out this application. You will need to submit one request for each student.
Twain Parking Lot Reminders
The North lot is NOT a drop-off/ pick-up zone. It is for parking only. We MUST keep the loop open for busses and emergency vehicles. This rule applies to everyone, so please be cooperative and follow it.
The large, central lot has two lanes: a drop-off/ pick-up lane on the outside of the loop and a driving lane on the inside.
Please note: Drivers MAY NOT get out of your car while in the outside drop-off/ pick-up lane. Your students must exit to the outside of the loop, and drivers must not exit the car to walk students up or pick them up. If you have younger children who need to be walked up or picked up at the door, you MUST park your car in one of the lots or on the street.
Smoking and pets are not permitted on school grounds. Please leave your pets at home for the safety and comfort of all of our students and families.
Please do NOT swear on school grounds. We are trying to set a positive example for behavior for our Twain Comets, and shouting and swearing at other drivers does not set the right example for our kids. We ask our students to be respectful, organized, cooperative, kind, and safe, and we expect those behaviors to be modeled by our parents, too.
