Fundamental 5 Expectations

Why do we use the Fundamental 5?
The Fundamental Five provides a concrete guideline to help teachers improve instruction. "F5" increases the level of cognition in a classroom by channeling teachers actions into tangible practices which improve student retention of content.

Fundamental Five Key Points
1. Frame the Lesson
WE WILL = WHAT THE GROUP IS LEARNING
I WILL = WHAT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DO AT THE END OF THE LESSON
- Use "We will" and "I will" statements to Introduce the learning objectives at the beginning of the lesson.
- Include the learning and content objectives in these statements.
- Reflect on whether the objective was met at the end of the lesson.
2. Power Zone
- Consistent monitoring while students are working.
- Continually micro-adjusting the instruction to meet the needs of students.
- Reinforce success!
3. Purposeful Talk
- Make the content comprehensible.
- Give students time to share their learning.
- Provide guidelines to focus the conversation.
4. Recognize & Reinforce
- Personalize successes and effort by using student names.
- Be specific!
5. Write Critically
- Provide students with opportunities to organize, clarify, defend, refute, analyze, connect and/or expand on ideas and concepts through writing.
